<p>catch-22 (joseph heller): hilariously written about a serious subject. read if you haven't already.
discworld series (terry pratchett): parodies everything, from condoms to opera. pratchett is brilliant. i met him in 2003!
life of pi (yann martel): slow to get into, but beautifully written and very moving.
bel canto (ann patchett): well-written with an interesting premise and captivating characters. don't read the epilogue, though; it'll spoil the story.</p>

<p>A newer book I really like is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. (It's about a boy with Asperger's Syndrome who tries to solve a mystery involving his neighbor's dead dog and some other stuff.)</p>
