Favorite classic novels!!

I'm looking for a new classic novel to read and would appreciate it if you could comment your favorite classics!

My favorites (so far)
• To Kill A Mockingbird
• The Outsiders
• The Great Gatsby

Thanks!!

All I can think of right now are The Picture of Dorian Gray and Flowers for Algernon.

^Nice picks!

I’d go with everything on this list:
http://www.modernlibrary.com/top-100/100-best-novels/

Anna Karenina-Leo Tolstoy
1984-George Orwell

The Great Gatsby, Crime and Punishment, Catcher in the Rye, and Animal Farm.

^If you liked Crime and Punishment, you should really check out The Injured and the Insulted

To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye, Crime and Punishment, and my all-time favourite (by far), A Separate Peace.

Gatsby, Ulysses, Crime and Punishment, Huck, Slaughterhouse-Five, The Things They Carried, Lord of the Flies, Catcher in the Rye, among many others :).

Breakfast of Champions!

And why is To Kill a Mockingbird such a great book? I found it a slow, somewhat drab depiction of everyday life for a southern kid who learns a little lesson at the end about racism.

Tess of the D’Urbervilles

The Scarlet Letter was actually a fabulous book, one I wasn’t necessarily expecting to love but I did love it. If you’re looking for a marathon book and don’t mind reading about religion, then I would recommend The Brothers Karamazov. I’m about halfway through it right now and it’s pretty good too.

Frankenstein (1833) is much better than the movie!
My English teacher strongly recommends Jane Eyre.
Siddhartha (H. Hesse) was also a good read.
The Story of the Stone 「石頭記」 has a great translation by David Hawkes and John Minford. It’s 2500 pages long in 5 volumes, and it will consume 6 months of your life, but there’s a reason it’s so popular. Mao Zedong was said to have read it 5 times!

Does Catch-22 count? Easily my favorite novel of all time – a long, yet very rewarding read.

Crime and Punishment, Frankenstein, and Pride and Prejudice are all quite good.

Cat in the hat, Little engine that could, One fish two fish red fish blue fish.

If you love or want to try some English literature:
Jane Eyre
Pride and Prejudice

Others(really good in my eyes) :
1984
A Separate Peace
Gone With the Wind

I think they are great but some people I know hate them:
A room with a view
The postman always rings twice

I’m surprised some people recommended The Story of the Stone. It’s a Chinese classic, really hard even for Chinese students. I guess you need to be genuinely interested in Chinese cultures to pick up this one.

Some Japanese classics in case you’re also interested:
Rashomon
Snow Country & The Old Capital
IQ84 (This one is not a classic, but it’s very very popular… I think it’s a weird yet very intriguing book. It also has something to do with 1984 by George Orwell, as you can see in the title. If you want to know something about the contemporary Japanese society, way to go!)

I don’t know why I type so much, I just really love reading and it’s been a while since I talked to someone about my reading and books and stuff like that.
