Favorite Concertos?

^agreed! Livemylife has great taste! I actually have a video of Chung playing the Bruch on my iPod. It's amazing.

Ah, it is too cliche for me to post in this thread...

thanks. :]
I love Sibelius in d minor played by Oistrakh.
CrystalPineapple: which is the one you don't like?

the one by heifetz is far better...

(resurrects old thread)

We played the Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor in my orchestra. IT WAS PHENOMENAL.
I also like the Saint-Saens Il Rondo Capriccioso one.

Mendelsohn violin concerto

The emperor!!!

Rachmoninoff 2nd piano concerto
Elgar Cello Concerto (although after Dupre, that piece can not be played better than she played it.)

But let’s not kid ourselves, concertos are great but none of my five favorite (or even ten) pieces is a concerto… Most of them are symphonies.

Top 10 favorite pieces

1) Mahler 6
2) The Rite of Spring
3) Mozart Requiem
4) Bach B Minor Mass
5) Dvorak 9
6) Mahler 9
7) Sibelius 7
8) Eroica
9) Mahler 5
10) Koyaanisqatsi (only with the film though)

Lots of the above-mentioned favorites performed live here: [Welcome to the Cliburn Competition Webcast](http://www.cliburn.tv/) on the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Web site.

Concerti…ummm…

The Walton Viola Concerto is awesome.
Barber Piano Concerto
Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 2
Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 4 (the weird one for left hand only)
Penderecki Viola Concerto
Stravinsky’s Concerto in E flat (Dumbarton Oaks) really isn’t a concerto in the modern sense, nor is Barber’s Capricorn Concerto or Bach’s Brandenburg Concerti, but I think they still count. :stuck_out_tongue:
Barber’s Cello Concerto! Very…intense.
Berg Violin Concerto
Linde’s Cello Concerto
Schnittke’s Cello and Viola Concerti

And those are just a few…

Most of those are kind of “meh” for me, but I love Sib 7!

in no particular order:

Elgar Cello concerto in E minor, op. 85
Schumann piano concerto in A minor, op. 54
Rachmaninoff piano concerto no. 2 in c minor op. 18
Shostakovich Violin concerto no. 1 in A minor, op. 77
Dvorak cello concerto in B minor, op. 104
Mozart Concerto for Flute, Harp, and Orchestra, K. 299 (esp. the 2nd movement!)
Brahms Concerto for Violin and Cello in A minor, op. 102
Haydn Cello Concerto in D major, Hob. VIIb/2
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto no. 1 in B flat minor, op. 23

And, just for good measure—

Bottesini, Double Bass Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp minor

The only actual Concerto I like is Vivaldi’s Quattro Stagioni.

My favorite piece overall is Shoctakovich’s Opus 110 String Quartet in C Minor, specifically the Alegro Molto movement.

Good thread!

I don’t listen to many true concertos (I’m more of a symphony person), but these two are great:

Beethoven - Violin Concerto in D, Opus 61
Mozart - Clarinet concerto in A major

Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto…it is the absolute best. My dream is to play it. It combines beauty, flashiness, and epicness in one piece of music.

my favorite concerto is the sibelius violin concerto-hands down.
and i agree with livemylife-oistrakh is the best!

Sibelius violin concerto. This piece is godly!

If you think that, you must not have heard Ferras’s Sibelius!

I also really like the Schoenberg Piano Concerto, now that I think about it.

Boccherini’s Cello Concerto in B-flat

This morning, listening to several of Albinoni’s Violin & Oboe concerti (Op. 9).

Two under-appreciated composers IMO.

proletariat2, I have listened to Ferras’s rendition (it was actually the first time I listened to the piece) and I thought it was great, but I prefer Oistrakh’s version. But Ferras is definitely a close second ;)

Oh well. People think it’s blasphemy when I say I actually like Hahn’s version quite a bit. Speaking of Hilary Hahn, her Schoenberg is fantastic!
