Violin people out there!

Spin on the "Piano people out there" thread.

List the violin pieces that you are playing so far, and what your challenges are and what you think of the piece.

1). I'm just starting czardas by Monti. Its a pretty easy piece, but I need to make the piece sound more gypsy-like, by adding more expressive slides... Also the harmonics are tricky
2) The entire Bruch Concerto (all three movements)... First two movements are pretty easier, last movement is pretty difficult with the fast double stops and tenths....

What are some good pieces for beginner/intermediate players? I have been playing the violin for 2 years. Any recommendations?

Look into the Suzuki method books. They have a great progression from easy to harder pieces.

Hey go-vibe, that's so cool! I love meeting other violin people. So far I am on Suzuki book 5 and am working my way through Vivaldi's Concerto in G Minor. I will also be starting either the Nardini, Sitt, Viotti, or Seitz concertos. Any opinions on those, if you have heard of them?

About how long did you spend on each Suzuki book? Also, about how long each day/week did u practice?

^^^

When I started out, I spent about 1 year/suzuki book. (I was doing the "full" suzuki method, believe me, you can go a lot faster than that.)

I practice, as of now, an hour a day, 7 days/week. When I was still doing suzuki books, I practiced that much from Book 5 on. Book 3-5 I would probably only do 30 min a day. Before that, I maybe did 15-30 probably 4-7 days a week. It really depends on how much time you have, and how much you want to commit.

Currently, I'm working on Paganini's Moto Perpetuo. It would be fairly easy...if it wasn't so fast!!! (there are a couple parts that are hard going slowly...)

yeah u can quickly move through suzuki.
If you want to MASTER each song on the books, think at most 1/2 year per book.
I started slowly at first (2 years through first three) but then went through like 6 books in 2 years. I finnished after 5 years, but I really dont have enough time to practice anymore, so I wont get any more advanced that book 10 + some other books.

If I would be able to get less than 4 hours of sleep, maybe i would be able to keep up.

I LOVE the Bruch concerto, go-vibe. Is it very difficult? I am a pianist, not a violinist, but I am curious.

I am wondering if anyone has played the 24th Paganini caprice. Is this really among one of the most difficult miniatures for violin? That's what I keep on hearing anyways.

I'm a violin, but not hard core about it like the typical violin. I enjoyed figuring out (and eventually breaking down and buying) the music to Thank God I'm a Country Boy and Devil Went Down to Georgia.

I played violin. pshhh! Then quit.

Thought I might let you know. ;)

i practice maybe an hour to an hour and a half a day. my teacher would like 2-3 hours.

i think the violin is one of the most underappreciated instruments in the world, people don't realize the pains we go to to make sure each note is perfectly in tune...

has anyone ever heard joshua bell? amazing..simply amazing

ooh. yea. I heard him play a concerto from The Red Violin live... AMAZING!

okay here we go.

Tchaikovsky violin concerto, movement 1 (its a BEAST to play... apparently OMEA doesn't even have it on its list of accepted pieces because of its insaneness. i spent probably 3 hours a day for several months practicing it and it still didnt sound that great) its really really beautiful though, and well worth the time spent. i suggest everyone listen to it and learn it at some point during your violin career.

mendlessohn violin concerto (a minor? maybe?) this song is just straight up awesome. really powerful. listen and learn this one too.

lol I played violin right up to 8th grade, then quit. when i have the time, i still play but i just adapt metal music (mostly the melodies) to the violin...

lol joshua bell...marry me...

and dude yanners...that's so awesome. i think you would really like apocalyptica, they're this rather famous group of 4 cellists who play metallica songs (look them up on Amazon). have you heard of them?

I agree with chrischang about the Mendelssohn: gorgeous piece, especially the opening theme of the first movement.

In my opinion, Zigeunerweisen by Pablo de Sarasate is quite possibly the most technically difficult piece ever to be composed for violin.

um, whoever says Zigeunerweisen is"technically difficult piece ever to be composed for violin" is nuts and needs to look/play more violin pieces! For concerti, Try the Sibelius, Brahms, or Tchaikovsky Concerto... I don't see how zigeunerweisen is the "most" difficult, ... The most difficult pieceis the last rose of summer by Ernst or paganini caprices

has anyone ever heard joshua bell? amazing..simply amazing

Um, no... Joshua has always struck me as sounding as no better than the typical Juilliard grad - albeit with a weaker tone. It's amazing how good looks and histrionics can further your career, though. If you really want to see great violinists, see Oistrakh, Milstein, or Heifetz... Heck, even vengerov is better than bell! (Joshua bell makes a lot of mistakes in performances, and his recordings are the result of clipping)...
