What are your favorite EC? Why did you join? Why is it so important to you if at all?

I would say mine would be Student Government. I love it and live it. I started way back in 6th grade when I decided to run for class president because I had nothing better to do and ended up really enjoying it. I ended up being 7th and student body president at my middle school. I ran for Freshmen president and sophomore president but lost both times sadly, but became sophomore class representative and am now currently ASB Parliamentarian. I'm pretty sure without it I'd be one of those kids who just stays at home and studies all the time. It's helped build my character a lot and make me open to many other things and it's great to take charge and build things up from scratch or following the footsteps of the community legends.

I love quizbowl. For those who don’t know, it’s a competition of 4 on 4 teams where they just read questions and you try to buzz in and answer. I like it so much because it makes me feel like the stuff I learn in class helps me somehow, and I guess it helps me review for my classes as well. I just really like competition.

my favorite EC is going to tutor little kids at a predominantly mexican grade school. i love it. it’s part of the outreach club, which i’m in. i love it because i love kids and helping them with their homework is a breeze since it’s usually just something like a super easy grade 2 worksheet it’s the highlight of my week.

Volleyball, as I think it is the most team-based sport and just feels so satisfying every time my team scores a point. I play setter, which is a position that doesn’t get nearly as much glory as the hitters, but it feels good to me whenever I can help someone get a kill. Volleyball has also helped me improve my leadership capabilities as the setter is like the quarterback of the team and needs to call the different plays.

Tennis (here comes the list): Played since I was like 6, play 4 times a week for the past 3 years. Compete in tournaments (non high school related) throughout my region, won some, attended national team tennis finals and placed 13th in the country. 4 years varsity, captain junior and (most likely)senior year. All-state one year, all-conference two years, doubles state champ as well. I volunteer tennis, was my school’s head organizer for a charity tournament, and will be a co-tournament director for the tournament next year. This summer I wil have a job teaching tennis and I have given private lessons in the past.

It’s fun, and my list shows a passion that I imagine colleges will find appealing.

Speech! I do speech and debate, and debate can be fun, but I adore speech. It’s completely transformed who I am by giving me more confidence, wonderful friends, communication skills, critical thinking skills and opportunities, the ability to say what’s important to me, relatability skills, respect for others, self-respect, motivation…the list goes on and on. I’ve done it since I was in seventh grade, so I’m in my fourth year now, and I’ve never been so excited about my speeches. I’m doing a persuasive speech on why we shouldn’t hide our flaws, and it’s really personal, but the impact has been wonderful already. I can’t wait for tournament seasons to start, and although competition has never been my prime motivation in speech, I’d love to do well at nationals this year. :)

My favorite was genetics lab tech/research assisting. You never really know how mundane the life of a researcher is until you spend hours and hours and hours praying that your beloved sick flies don’t die out before you can count 'em. I learned a lot, met amazing people, and actually saw bio theory at work. And it’s a really steep learning curve. I guess I like science and labs, so that’s why The other activity I love would be piano.

Speech and debate most definitely. Even though I’m not the best, I love it so much that I’m willing to work hard to do better. Everyone in there is educated, smart, and nice. I highly recommend that everyone try it.

B-ball for life. I’ve been playing since I was about 5. Played multiple leagues for at least 8 seasons, and go to the park about every day to play pick up games.

Jazz band I started sophomore year (I play flute, but I taught myself saxophone), and I loved it. My school has jazz I (the one for the top people) and jazz II (the one for the not-so-good people). I made jazz I last year (junior), but I also did jazz II just for the heck of it (they needed a lead alto, and I love jazz so much I offered to do both). I love the people in it, the music we play, everything.

I am involved in the Linux/Tech community in my town. I write software for fun, as well as presenting at a world-renown open-source convention annually.
