Feasibility of Brown PLME, HPME, etc...

Hello,

I am entering my senior year at McNair Academic High School, ranked first or second in New Jersey and about 43rd in the nation. I would love to attend a 7-8 year medical program or an engineering school, though I am not too sure of my chances of being accepted into the former...

My "reach" schools would be Brown PLME, Northwestern HPME, Rice-Baylor, Boston University (School of Medicine), George Washington (School of Medicine), and Penn State-Jefferson Medical School. I am also open to the traditional route to medical school and may consider Harvard University, though I am not sure if my stats stack up to its standards.

SAT
October '09:
CR- 670
Math- 770
Writing- 730
Combined: 2170

June '10:
CR- 760
Math- 800
Writing- 710
Combined: 2270

Superscore: 2290

I do not plan to take the SAT again unless you would recommend I do (especially for that writing score!). In case it is relevant, I had a 10 on the essay both times.

GPA/Courses

My weighted GPA is a 100.842. Even though our school does not officially rank, I am second in a class of 150.

I have taken over four years of math, science, and English, four years of social studies, three years of Spanish, two of art, and one year of music. I took AP Biology and European History my sophomore year (5 in both), and took AP Computer Science, Spanish Language, Chemistry, US History, and English Language my junior year. I have yet to receive my scores, but I will post them when I receive them.

My senior schedule is as follows:

AP Calculus BC
AP English Literature and Composition
AP Physics B
AP Art History
History of Film Analysis (Honors)
Computer Business Applications (State requirement)
Physical Education/Health
Independent Research 2(in which I independently pursue a science research topic of my choice)

Extracurriculars

Mock Trial Team/Law Club (Captain/President) [The two are intertwined at our school]
Model United Nations (Treasurer, may become President)
Math Club (Vice President)
National Honor Society (Vice President)
Peer Tutoring
Class Treasurer
Science Research (2-time Gold Medal winner at counties, 2nd place at the regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium)

I have performed research at Steven's Institute of Technology in Hoboken for almost a year as well as at the St. Peter's College Center for Microplasma Science and Technology.

Since I do not wish for this to be a laundry list of EC's and awards, please let me know if you need more specific distinctions/awards.

Community Service

I have tutored fellow students for over 180 hours, performed charity work with the National Honor Society for over 50, volunteered at the Jersey City Medical Center for almost 200, performed volunteer research into plasma for 200 hours.

Overall, I'm relatively open to other careers as well, perhaps even engineering schools. I would greatly appreciate advice on whether my stats match up with these top-tier programs, and if not, potential alternatives, perhaps even alternate career choices. On a similar note, I have been considering applying ED to Brown PLME. What are your thoughts on this? Is it even feasible? I appreciate your time and effort.

Thank you.

Everything looks great, but PLME is extremely competitive. I’d say with all of your accomplishments in science and research, you are a very well qualified candidate. Assuming your essay and recs are good, it’d probably be a slight reach.

All right, thank you. Is there a specific part of my resume that I ought to build over the summer?

bump 10char

what do you mean by slight reach?

HPME is as competitive if not more than PLME…HPME for sure is looking for very high academic credentials.

hmm, actually, I kind of think that your medical ec’s are lacking. I think your research helps though. Also, I agree with pk92, HPME and PLME are ridiculously competitive-since there are SO FEW spots. Actually, I got the MSAR book, and HPME accepted about 17 people last year! Just a few years ago, that numbr was 30-40.
But, PK, I think PLME is more competitive, since there are a lot more applicants, but also because there is no interview-so everyone is on equal playing field-and your essays are REALLY important.

What i mean is for HPME, there are several stages-so your application is more likely not to blend in with everything else. For example, after you get the application-you know that you are in the top 700, then obviously-this is the hardest-after you get an interview-you know that you have what it takes to get in, its up to your personal skills now
whereas, in PLME, is like 1000 kids all applying and their essays are supposed to stand out-it seems more like a cluster-f***
haha,

You are a qualified candidate to be ‘considered’.

You have not shown enough interest in the Medicine Field. Albeit its ALOT, its not enough. Show more passion. ( MY OPINION, i may be very wrong)

I am on a very similar path, your competition, so I MAY be biased.

I would be a Brown ED PLME applicant this application season.

Thank you.

As good as the scores, ECs, and course-rigor you have, it’s just not HPME/PLME material. You need a bit more med. experience/research to show a grand passion in the subject to be accepted to these super selective programs. Even then, the admissions people are subjective in their choices. Rice and GW seem feasible for you though. You a cut below the usual Harvard material (in EC field) but I would definitely apply if I were you.

Thank you all for your valuable insight. I apologize for the late reply, but here are a few clarifications…

Medically-related distinctions and programs include:

Volunteering at a medical center over the summer; gave direct, patient-side care to post-surgery and pulmonary patients (Summer 2009-2010, 200 hours)

Participated in a summer program to further scientific, mathematical, and medical careers for low-income students (Summer 2008, 150 hours) at UMDNJ

Received the Diamante Chiropractic Health Science Award for “an outstanding project related to the health sciences” (2007)

I have also spearheaded and implemented an MIT InvenTeams program at my high school.

Would the above suffice, or do the previous comments still stand?

As for those AP scores, received a 5 on all save for Spanish Language (4).

@ Nitcomp- You have an excellent chance at acceptance to PLME, you have quite a few medical ECs with the academics and passion to back it up. Wish you the best in application season!
