We have had continual snow, lot's of stuff to deal with and now I have to get my taxes done this week and the FAFSA and the CSS. Is it even worth it to jump through these hoops?

I'll try my best to get it done, but I could use another week!!

As I recall, last year we asked for an extension to Feb 15th for submitting our tax return, as that date coincided with the deadline for another school. It did not affect the financial aid eventually received. And it was worth it for our family. Villanova came within $3500 of meeting need with a combination of grants, subsidized loans and work study.

My dad called the FA office today saying that he wouldn’t have everything ready by Feb 7th and they told him that that was just the priority deadline. If we can’t do it by then, then just do it as soon as possible.

The friendly postcard we recvd in the mail from VU says that we have to send signed completed tax forms and w2’s by 2-7. says nothing about estimating. we are still waiting on some tax forms. what do we do?

do you think that we can send in estimates for now?

I called VU FA on the phone today and the automated msg said to get the tax returns in ‘as soon as possible’ and any FA offer would be ‘temporary’. the msg did not say anything about whether you can send in a fafsa based on an estimates.

putting 2 and 2 together, it seems that if you send in a fafsa and css based on estimates, you 'd get a FA number, but it wd not be final.

I don’t understand why the deadline for Villanova is a week before every other school I applied to, but my parents’ and my taxes were not ready to mail today. My mom interpreted the message to mean, send them asap! But we also think due to the weather the last few weeks, so many financial deadlines and tax filing deadlines have been moved, there should be a few days grace period. we’ll be sending them as soon as possible, hopefully early tomorrow afternoon. At this point, not worth the stress…I don’t think a one day difference in delivery will result in them giving your FA to someone else!

At this point, the goal is to allocate magnitudes of financial aid, and provide an announcement to the student as soon as possible. The University really doesn’t care at this time whether your schedule ZZ is perfectly filled out. Submit whatever you can, with the key income numbers and W2s, and then send an update when you finalize the tax forms.

Every offer of financial aid is subject to revision as final info is available, and subject to additional verification if there are questions. If you current FA and tax submital is 96% accurate in terms of income, that is what matters now, I believe. You don’t need to submit in the tax forms to the IRS at this time.

By the way, my son received a financial aid offer from another PA. college. We are PA. residents. The offer included an estimated grant from PHEAA that seemed much lower than I expected. The fine print said that if PHEAA provides a larger grant than they estimated, they would reduce the college’s need based aid by that amount. I’m not complaining about it, just highlighting that matter.

And please don’t stress! Last year, our initial mailing of tax return copies was lost in the blizzard that shut down Philadelphia, including USPS delivery, for a week. Even though I had a return receipt, the post office would not try to track it down until it was more than two weeks over due. VU FA asked me not to send a second copy, as they were swamped with forms and working as quickly as they could to get them into the correct files. Eventually they did request a second copy be mailed, which I did immediately, probably towards the end of Feb. We received a financial aid offer on MyNova with everyone else and the delay did not cause us to lose out on any aid.

I will agree that financial aid awards are not final until the tuition bill is forwarded in August. Due to a reduction in housing cost because of a forced triple, my son’s subsidized Stafford loan was reduced slightly, and this did not show on a statement until October (at least we think that’s why the loan was less than originally offered).
