Current students and parents..This one's is for you...

I noticed that there was an approx.$3k fee hike from the year '12 - '13 to '13 - '14..
From approx.56k per year to 59k..
When I inquired if this sort of hike was to be expected every year, I was told yes.. An increase of 3% to 5% was to be expected every year..
Thats an increase of almost 3k per year..
As an international student, who is already finding it quite hard to afford 59k, Im wondering how everyone else in similar situations does?
Also, is it even feasible, I think there are very less unis/colleges that cost over 60k per year....
Has there been an increase every year for the past several years?
In 4 years , WPI will cost >$65k.... will this really happen..
And Im told that the financial aid will not be increased....
Anyone else have similar information?
feel free to share!!
But what I really wanna know is if this has been a trend in the past years...since Im trying to plan out the financials before i commit to wpi..so a quick reply will be greatly appreciated!

It is not uncommon to see universities increasing their tuition fee by a considerable percentage every year. WPI, like other universities, does the same. Therefore, you can expect an increase of approximately $2000-$3000 per year in WPI’s tuition fee.
I’m a senior in High School, planning on graduating from WPI. Also, did you read my comment on off campus housing at another thread of yours?

I thought that financial aid gets reassessed every year? So there is some potential for some of that to get covered? I’m asking, I don’t really know.
But, yes, you will have that problem at 99.99 % of colleges! So it won’t be better somewhere else.

About the fee hike…I had no idea colleges increase it by such a considerable amount EVERY YEAR…wow… this is a major blow to be honest :(

And no, the financial aid at WPI isn’t changed…

@Cricketfreak…yes i saw your reply…sorry wasn’t able to reply…Am in crises mode at the mo due to this…hahaha…

Problem is…I’m international and i dont know anyone at WPI…nor do i have any family there…

i have tried looking at craigslist for rooms and stuff…and found that most cost 600/month…without food…

also since I’m all the way here…it’s gonna be hard for me to talk to someone and choose a place since i don’t knw anyone there… and going blindly into this without meeting my room mates/landlord personally is a big gamble…coz ill be stuck with them for a whole year at least.

also…WPI states on its site.that they will NOT take part in any out of campus housing negotiations…soo thts promble too…

not to mention…food is gonna cost extra…around at least 3 to 4k$ per year…

and not to mention transport…

and i don’t knw how safe Worcester is either…

so basically…

first time in a new country…which i have never been in…
going to live with someone i haven’t met personally…
cooking own food…
walking to and fro uni…
its a HUGE change…dont ya think so…

and right now…according to my calculations…i need an on campus job to make WPI YEAR ONE affordable…

i dunno wht ill do if the fee keeps increasing every year! Hahah…this is quite messed up now tht I read it again :p

on a lighter note…are u still in contact with the freshmen at WPI? is it possible for u to inbox me his/her contact details …at their discretion ofc…

Point of reference on off campus housing costs.

My D lives about 10 minutes walk off campus. She and two other women share a three bedroom apartment. Their rent is $1000 per month (split 3 ways is $333 each per month). Her share of the utilites is about $80 per month.

Is it possible to know how your D found out about the apartment? Do all the apartments in that area cost similar? What exactly is that area called… im only familiar with craigslist so i used that for the research. can you suggest a better site for listings?

feel free to inbox me if any info is sensitive or as such. :)

Many students choose to live on campus the first year even though it is more expensive. This way they get to know other students and the area which makes it easier to move off campus for your second year. There are many rentals near campus that are a short walk and a lot of students move into apartments being vacated by graduating seniors. Word of mouth seems to be a very effective way to find an apartment at WPI. From what I have heard from my daughter, leases tend to be signed early in the year, so you may have difficulty finding something for the 2013 - 2014 school year now.

As for neighborhoods, if you look at google maps, there are loads of apartments between Highland Street (route 9) and campus. The cross streets between Highland, Institute, and Salisbury Streets are all very close to campus, have a lot of rentals with students, and are also where most of the fraternity and sorority houses are. Personally, I would be careful about going south of Highland Street.

I hope this helps. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to try to sort this all out from abroad! Feel free to PM me if you have more questions about the area. I am fairly familiar with it.

There were several apartments that my D and her friends were looking at and they were all around the same price. The apartment is on the first block south of Highland. I didn’t see much of a difference between the area north (ie WPI side) and just immediately south of Highland (other than having to cross Highland, which is a busy street).

Most of the apartments on her street are occupied by fellow WPI students. Her apartment is old but well maintained. The landlord sends someone right over to fix anything that the women need fixing, so they have no complaints.
