Son will be transferring to UNC this fall as a junior. He has had more than enough of dorm life after 2 years at current school.

Does anyone have any recommendations about apartment complexes or general locations?

Some of the ones he has looked at online are: The Bridges at Chapel Hill, Timber Hollow, Providence Glen, The Villages of Chapel Hill, Mill Creek, and Southern Village.

Are there certain bus routes that are better to be on? Someone told him that living south of town towards or in Carrboro is better than living north up near I-40--any truth to that? What about the University Mall area, is that sketchy?

Have you looked at Granville Towers? It is right off of campus and near all the classes. I know some transfer students stay there. I think they put them on a separate floor and different building then most of the other students. It is easy walking distance to classes and on flat ground.

mkm56: The University Mall area is not at all sketchy. It's fairly close in to campus, though in the opposite direction from Carrboro, but a nice area. I don't know what bus routes are like, though. I can also believe that living in Carrboro would be much better than being out in one of these places close to I-40. Carrboro just isn't that far away, so bus service would be reliable and often, I would think; you could also walk from Carrboro if you had to (a bit of a hike, but certainly do-able). Southern Village is pretty nice, I think.

alcook4u, son really wants to live in apt. where he has a kitchen and can do own cooking, control noise, his own sleep schedule, etc. Sounds like Granville is dorm living.

Jack, thanks for the feedback. People have said they really like the Carrboro area--nice laid back feel, restaurants, food market, interesting shops, etc. I have only been on UNC campus for a couple sporting events and graduations. So I don't know the "town" at all.

mkm56: I just sent you a pm. Yes--people love Carrboro; it is definitely very laid back--kind of an old hippie town--with a little farmers market, also Cats Cradle, which books nationally known bands, and some great restaurants, including Crooks Corner (which is actually pretty well known).

I have to admit I'm looking forward to investigating the other areas of Chapel Hill. My son said that he could go apt. shopping without me... no way, this sounds like too much fun!
