If I was denied from Northwestern and Stanford, and waitlisted at Notre Dame, do I somewhat stand a chance with Vandy?

Here are some quick stats, theres more on some of my other posts.

1370/2100 (620CR, 750M, 730W)
760 Math Level II, 710 Biology-M
4.28/4.0 (Ranked 1 of ~500)
ACT 31
Work for 4 years, study abroad experience, bilingual, NHS, Stuco

At this point, Duke, Vandy and Brown are my last hopes. (Although Vandy is my #1) How likely am I to get denied?

This is a very tough time of year for everyone. (Who gets in all their places they applied to?) When so many applicants are applying to so many schools, I believe the waitlists will be used, so there’s hope right there.

Just remember what to do if you are waitlisted: express to the school’s rep how much you would benefit them. Write about anything that has changed since you sent in your application (new awards? improved grades? published your school newspaper, or yearbook, or starred in a school play? Got a write up in your local newspaper?) Be sure to send it to your admissions representative, as that’s the person who needs to stick up for you!

And I really hope you had a few safeties. Reserve a place there by May 1st, as nothing is guaranteed except an acceptance before then. Waitlists open up June-August. Good luck!

“At this point, Duke, Vandy and Brown are my last hopes.”

@csmith…did you apply to any safeties? I’m just curious because all of the schools you applied to are very, very selective. I’m hopeful you have a back-up just in case one of these three doesn’t pan out for you. Hopefully, though, it won’t be necessary:)

I have a few safeties-- UNC Chapel Hill, Elon (received scholarship for Honors college). They are both great schools, but I love Vanderbilt more than anything.

cssmith, I hope you applied to a match college. None of these schools are safeties or for that matter matches. If not, you could have used better guidance in your application list. Duke and Brown are reach colleges even if your stats were in the top quartile just due to volume in applications… and Vandy will turn away scores of fully qualified students, too. Please tell us you have a match college in the mix?

You have very good stats and you can succeed at most of the colleges on Planet Earth! but those colleges named do not make up a balanced list. I hope you applied to a public college at least in your home state.

Your waitlist at Notre Dame could turn into an admission there if you are honest with them, and seem to understand the mission of their university and you can guarantee you would attend if offered a seat that will come open.

You are bilingual plus class valedictorian? If you get in a bind April 1, by all means enlist the support of your guidance counselor to fight for you to get off of a waitlist and get a new letter of reference and send an “intention to accept” if offered a spot to the schools that waitlisted you.

hoping you left your safety school off this list as “ya got me worried.”
Personally, I believe adcoms respect students who work for cash and if you have been employed and still been class valedictorian…I hope this has been properly noted and will be a tipping factor for you.

Keep your head up. I got waitlisted at Northwestern, Emory, and University of Virginia; rejected from Stanford. But I got into Berkeley and UCLA so I’m keeping some hope.

I’m not URM, I’m white. And I forgot to mention my safeties. I’ve been accepted to about 5 schools already in my home state, including Purdue and Indiana University Bloomington. (Which are by no means terrible schools. I would just really like to get away for college!)

I guess I can only hope for the best but expect the worst? And there’s always options for transferring.

whew. Great. Purdue and Indiana are very good places. I hope you find more open doors and if you get waitlisted someplace, I wish you well working for the second chance at admission off that list. In August, everyone starts on the same starting line and you are a capable person anyplace.

You’ll be fine. I was just rejected from Nortwestern and Stanford (and waitlisted at WUSTL), and I received one of the full-tuition Cornelius Vanderbilt scholarships at Vandy.
