Some information about me: My first choice school is UVA, but I’m also applying to CNU, UMW, and W&M. I’m looking at a prospective major in accounting, but if I get into UVA then I might pursue Japanese (they’re the only school I’m applying to with a Japanese major). My SAT score is an 1840 (600 math, 610 writing, 630 reading) and I’m also taking the U.S. History SAT subject test.
I’m already signed up to take the Math 1 SAT subject test on October 3rd, and I’ve been reading about how it basically means nothing to colleges. It’s far too late to change which test I take, and I already worked through an entire Princeton Review book for Math 1. I figured I’d take the Math 1 instead of Math 2 because I don’t consider myself good at math. I got my only B’s in high school in Trig and Pre-Calc, and I cheated a lot in Pre-Calc to scrape by with a pretty low B.
Another question: do they provide a formula sheet for Math 1?
It’s not too late to change which test you take, as you can change that even on test day by simply taking another test offered on that day (all available tests are given to you in a big booklet).
I’m concerned by the fact that you think it’s okay to admit heavy cheating.
Are you planning to retake the SAT I? As of now, your scores are too low for UVA and W&M, so the SAT II choices wouldn’t matter.
Take the Math II exam because, as stated above, it’s not too late to switch. All the exams are in the same booklet; they don’t care which ones you take (with the exception of listening foreign language), just how many you take.
You’ve taken precalculus, so you’ll be expected to take Math II if you choose to use math as a subject test.
But the thing is, I’ve already studied for the Math I. I don’t live near a bookstore that sells SAT prep books, so I can’t buy another one for Math II. My family also doesn’t have a lot of money. I admitted to the cheating to show that I’m not that good at math. I didn’t even use my real name for this account so it’s not like college admissions could find me here.
I’m not retaking the SAT I because I feel my scores are just fine. I’m a URM, so that makes up for the scores. My brother got accepted with a 1900 and a lot of his friends had way lower scores than him and got accepted.
Also, @bodangles, what high school student hasn’t cheated? Honestly. I remember reading somewhere about a confidential survey where 74% of 12,000 high school students admitted to cheating. My precalc class didn’t even get past chapter 4 in the textbook (bad teacher) so if I took the Math II then half of the subject content would be completely unfamiliar to me.
First, lots of kids don’t cheat and you shouldn’t be proud of it or think it’s ok because “everyone else does it”. The problem? Here you are trying to get into college and you aren’t ready to take the Math 2 because you don’t know the material, because you didn’t bother to learn it! No amount of last minute studying will have you ready.
All the schools on your list have students sign an honor code and they all take that code very seriously.
UVA is the only school on your list that requires SAT 2’s. Based on the little bit you’ve told us about your grades and the level of math you’ve taken, UVA is a big reach for you. So is W&M. UVA, W&M, and CNU are all wholistic - so they look at grades, academic rigor, activities, awards, and scores (not in that order). Don’t expect to get into any of these just based on your URM status and SAT score. Most of these schools also only consider the math and reading part of the SAT. You are mid 50 percent at CNU on your current score and lower 25 percent at UVA and W&M. As a female your competition is even more fierce.
You need to retake the SAT or ACT if you want any sort of chance at UVA. A 1900 is quite a bit higher than your 1840 and the male competition is not as great as the female competition. Your URM status does not help your score at UVA or W&M.
