Fellows applicants

you may be correct on the number of fellows, i may have confused that with the number offered academic elite scholarship??

from website::
We expect over 1,000 students admitted to The University of Alabama this year to be eligible to apply for the University Fellows Experience. The competition will be very stiff. Because all those invited will have impressive grades and test scores, the UFE selection committee will consider the candidate’s record of service, leadership achievements, and extracurricular activities, and the candidate’s essays much more heavily than those grades and test scores. We seek students who ultimately will make a difference throughout their lives; therefore, creativity, productivity, service, leadership, and personal growth are points to highlight on your resum

^^^^
Is that info on the MyBama UFE application or somewhere else?

*We expect over 1,000 students admitted to The University of Alabama this year to be eligible to apply *

Being “eligible” does not mean that all of those that qualify actually apply. Some don’t apply at all; some choose only to apply to CBHP. I think Wellon said that they received about 500-600 apps last year.

you may be correct on the number of fellows, i may have confused that with the number offered academic elite scholarship??

From the website…

The University of Alabama will invite approximately 40 students to join the University Fellows Experience.

Per Wellon: Approx 8 - 10 are given Academic Elite scholarships.

yep on the application page … that page doesnt say how many invited to join, and that is probably why i confused elite vs fellows. you are probably correct on 40 fellows

Did you see the above? :)

From the website…

I know it can be confusing. :)

I’m a Freshman at UA in CBH, and I can tell you from experience and the experiences of my friends that:

a) Approximately 50 were invited to CBH finalists weekend, from which 40 were offered spots, with, by my calculations, 30 of the current 39 CBH Freshmen students who were invited to that weekend. Some students declined their spots and attend other universities. And some students were offered interviews/spots after that weekend, although I do know how many were on the waitlist or were offered spots otherwise. And, I know of at least one CBHer who was interviewed on Fellows weekend for both, and was accepted as a CBHer.
b) While I don’t know the exact number invited for Fellows weekend, I do know that there were 19 students enrolled for the Fall 2009 Seminar for Freshman Fellows. I assume that is the size of the Freshman Fellows class. I don’t know the actual number of spots offered, however.
c) My Fellows friend believes that there are 9 Academic Elite Scholars within the Freshman Fellows class.
d) CBH and the Fellows look for two different types of students in their application process. I can’t really explain the difference, but there is one. Both, however, are filled with bright, driven students who strive to make a difference on campus and in their futures in some way. There are only four Freshmen who are in both programs, I believe.
e) I love CBH, and I don’t know anyone in either CBH or Fellows who doesn’t love the program.

I hope to see some of you guys in Tuscaloosa in February! Feel free to ask me any questions, and if I don’t know the answer, I will ask someone who does.

Roll Tide!

Here’s a thought…
Do you think it makes the slightest bit of difference in the selection for CBH or Fellows if the student has already accepted (paid deposit) admission to the Univ.?

* I do know that there were 19 students enrolled for the Fall 2009 Seminar for Freshman Fellows. I assume that is the size of the Freshman Fellows class. I don’t know the actual number of spots offered, however.
*

No, that is an optional class. Many freshmen Fellows don’t take that class. UFE is not like CBHP that has required classes. It’s unlikely that an OOS UFE student is going to take that class if it’s going to bump their course load to over the 16 credit limit for their scholarship (which most have because of their stats).

There are usually between 38-40 UFE’s per freshmen class.

Fingers crossed for UFE…if I got in that I would 99% likely attend UA…without UFE, I probably won’t attend

I wish that UFE would accept more than 40 kids. It would still be special if it accepted - say - 60 kids - especially when this year there will be 600+ applying and when you consider the stats of those kids (nearly all have ACTs over 32 - which is 99th percentile).

And, when you think of the purpose of UFE, to develop programs, etc, for those in the Blackbelt region, having a few more kids could be a good thing.

Several years ago, CBH increased its number from 20 students to 40 students. Doing so has not diminished it’s importance.

i’ll cross my fingers for you rocket, even though my son also wants a spot (so dont take his)LOL

I agree. I applied to 12 schools, have narrowed it down to 8, and Alabama is definitely one of the 8. If I get the UFE, then Alabama would definitely be one of the top 2 or 3. Nervous.

^Eight? That’s pretty big, especially since it’s January. I think I’d have to make UFE or CBHP to go. Do we hear from both in February?

If memory serves me correct, CBHP releases its list in mid March. A student has until mid April to decide if he or she wants the spot. My son waited until the deadline to accept his place – he wanted to see the financial offers from other schools before making a decision.

I didn’t do CBHP, UFE was much more my style. I have over 1000 hours of volunteering, so I hope that boosts my app.

I’m down to 4 schools(only applied to 5)

i dont envy any of the kids trying to make that final decision. if already honors or ufe applicant, pretty sure they have great offers from many schools either already in or waiting on. momreads, i think that was a smart choice your son made…to compare all offers

momreads -
with your son deciding mid-April (f I read correctly,) did he have problems getting his choice of housing?

jrt336: I didn’t get accepted to all of them yet. I’m just still considering the three. I’ve already declined one school I was accepted into and am planning on declining 3 more regardless of decision (although I guess if I am rejected to the three, then I won’t be declining them. Haha.)

*Do we hear from both in February? *

No, the interviews are the week of Presidents Day, with UFE’s interviews later that week. Then they take a week or two to make final decisions, and then they notify in March. However, if a student is invited to both CBH and UFE for interviews, they’ll do them the same days.

That’s about what we experienced…
When my son went thru the CBH process, the interview was Presidents’ Monday and Tuesday (Feb 19 & 20), and we found out March 9th. I can’t remember what the deadline was to accept, but it was probably within a few weeks.

*with your son deciding mid-April (f I read correctly,) did he have problems getting his choice of housing? *

If this was last year, it shouldn’t have been that difficult to get housing for this last fall, because the school knew that the new huge Ridgecrest South buildings were going to open.
