Fellows decisions

Son is an alternate for Leadership Fellows. Disappointing , but he is still leaning toward accepting Elon U as his school/

Elon is a great school and I hope a Fellows slot becomes available for him, but just so you know - if your Son takes the first classes leading to the Minor in leadership he can request to be considered for lateral entry into the Leadership Fellows program. They have several hundred applications and only invite about 100 students to compete for 25 leadership fellows positions, so they know that they are going to miss some wonderful students with great potential leadership skills. I think they accept up to 5 lateral entries after freshman year, so who knows.

Leadership must be pretty selective. I applied for Leadership and Communications, got denied for Leadership, but still got Comm and the scholarship for it. From what I hear, you can still be active in the Isabella Canon Leadership program without being a Fellow. Professors are not biased, and some don’t even know who the Fellows are and who are not.

Interesting thread; we just visited on Friday and were told that leadership is easier than communications…very different criteria it was explained…

This year Elon received 1400 applications for all Fellow programs (up 20% from the previous year.) About half that (700 students ) were invited to interview on campus on the Fellows weekend. I think I recall we were told about 180 were competing for Leadership fellows at the Fellows weekend.

For the Leadership only 25 students are picked; for Honors Fellows- 40 students; for College Fellows -50 students, Business Fellows- 25 students; Communication Fellows-30

^ rodney - All the Elon Fellows programs are very selective. But the criteria for each program is different including different GPA/SAT minimums, so maybe thats what the person that you were talking to meant when they said that leadership is easier than communications, but it’s kind of like comparing apples and oranges.

Just to confirm…you most certainly can join the Isabella Cannon Leadership program without being a Fellow. There are seminars throughout the year that you attend. And also, most of my professors, if not all, do not know that I’m a fellow. I prefer this lol; I’d be really uncomfortable otherwise.

I was accepted as a leadership fellow this year, I think your son has a good shot to become one, because a lot of fellows really aren’t sure if they are going to Elon or not yet.

The numbers i heard were;
500 kids applied (for leadership)
100 kids invited
25 kids given leadership
5 given scholarship
5 alternatives

your son is in the top 30 of 500, you should be very proud of him.

Thanks for the info pakjan6!

Hope you have a great experience at Elon.

Son, who was an alternate for Leadership Fellow received an email today that he was accepted as a Leadership Fellow. He is quite excited!

I was wondering if experience in communications is helpful to become a communications fellow. My daughter ran her high school TV Broadcasting department and has been on local TV for an issue she went to DC to speak with Senators and Congressmen about. Will that sort of thing help her for a fellows scholarship or do they just care about the gpa.She has also started a foundation and has designed several websites, her own included.

^ shcisamax it will help. Generally speaking once you meet the minimum GPA/SAT requirements the selection process is very holistic, including resume, writing, interviews with your student, and group activities…
