Does anyone have a son or daughter that applied for one of the Fellows program? My d applied for Eagles Abroad. Hoping to hear by next week whether or not she will be interviewed.

My son applied for Eagles Abroad during the application process but then withdrew his name from consideration after he was accepted. After looking at the course requirements for a couple of possible majors he’s interested in, he wasn’t sure if he could complete the major’s requirements if he spent an entire year abroad. Of course I’m sure that it’s possible or they wouldn’t offer this program, but he didn’t want to take any chances. From my daughter’s study abroad, I noticed that the courses taken abroad are more of the humanities or gen-ed type courses, like language, history, art, etc. So if he takes 10 of those while abroad, that would leave mostly courses in his major (say Accounting, Finance, etc.) for the bulk of his coursework during the other three years. And there’s only so many of those you can take at one time - it’s good to break those up with some gen-eds for variety.

Plus, a year is a really long time and I don’t think he’s that committed to the idea. He will definitely do a semester abroad, though. Good luck to your daughter!

thanks horsfeathers. I have concerns about it also…but we figured that part of the interview process is to talk about how this whole thing would work. Not even sure if she will be offered an interview! Is your son definitely going to JUniata?

It’s been his number one choice from the beginning. But before committing he’s going to do an overnight there and at two other schools to get a feel for each place. I’m not sure how helpful this will be, especially since he’s not really the “perceptive” type.

On the surface Juniata seems to be his type of school: small, unpretentious, no Greek scene. We’re not really against Greeks or anything - in fact, my daughter is in a sorority at Gettysburg and it’s been a great experience for her - but we’re just hoping this means there’s a bit less partying at Juniata. On the other hand, they’re so isolated that maybe they drink because there’s not much else to do! You never really know until you get there. Again, my son doesn’t really care if people drink within reason, but he doesn’t drink at all and he’s just hoping that the partying doesn’t dominate as much as at other schools. In some ways it’s almost unavoidable. He’d have to go to someplace like Brigham Young or a very strict Christian school and he’s just not that religious.

The only thing that I worry about with Juniata is that a normal course load is five courses per semester, whereas at most other LACs, it seems to be four. My daughter has four each semester and spends an awful lot of time studying; and she’s an excellent student while my son is average academically. So I worry if he’ll be able to keep up.

Juniata was my d’s #1 for a long time, but now it is tied with another school, so we will see. Partly it will depend on how much aid she gets at both schools. Right now there is a 50% chance she will be at Juniata.
I did not know that about their courseload. That is worrisome. My d will have a few AP course credits, so maybe she can use that to lighten her load a bit. If she goes there I will have to talk to her about trying to take at least one “easier” course a semester.

I was told that they were late starting the reviews of the applications for the Fellows programs, and the interviews may be later than originally expected. More waiting!

cocoa- I was told that at least for the Eagles Fellow, my d should hear sometime next week if she will be interviewed. Fingers crossed! Good luck to you also!!

I just heard that I’m a finalist for the Arts Fellowship :)

Best of luck to everyone!

congrats sevenstars…hopefully we will hear something in the next few days!

D was called today to be interviewed for the Eagles Fellow! Very excited. Being interviewed by both the Spanish and Russian department. Not sure if I want her to go to Russia though, so we’ll see!

Congratulations! Best of luck to her on her interview.

Why not go to Russia? It would be very interesting.

Anyone hear back on the results of the Fellows interviews?? Hoping to hear soon one way or the other as it is integral to D’s decision on attendance!

Nope. Nothing yet Holliesue. My daughter is still waiting anxiously. Has anyone else who interviewed had a decision on Fellows?

parent100-which fellows did your d apply for? My d interviewed for Eagles abroad. they told her that the decision would be “sometime” in March…hoping it is sooner rather than later. We really need this info in order to make her final decision about what school she will choose.

We haven’t heard anything either. Still waiting on a few things from a few different schools. We thought applying EA would make the decision easier, but things really can’t be decided until all the information is in from all the schools.

cocoa-my sentiments exactly! we have had the acceptances in hand for a long time, but need FA and other decisions made for us before D can make up her mind! Looks like it will be April before she decides!
