D received letter on Saturday inviting her to apply to Fellows!

Congrats and best of luck to your D! Our D is a freshman in the program and is loving every minute of it.

Congratulations!!

My DD received her letter as well. Now, if I can just get her to buckle down and get to work on all the essays (UHP, CBHP, UFE).

We’re right there with you. DD received her invitation to apply today. So much to do… so little time!!

My son also received his letter on Saturday. It just isn’t too motivated to do any essays. He has interest in the fellows program because he likes being involved in service. He has not applied to CBHP because ‘computer’ work does not interest him. I know I read on here that the is not the whole point of the program. I guess he was not impressed with what he read on the website. The one thing I did not know is it counts as a minor and language requirement. So my question to all of you experience people is:

Can you complete the requirements for CBHP and also minor in something else? My son will probably come in with 21-24 credits of AP/dual enrollment and plans to study aerospace engineering. He is also interested in Spanish. Is all this possible and still be able to play in the band and/or ensemble. My son wants a balanced life an college not a stressed out four years. Thanks. Things are getting so exciting…

Hokiefan: CBHP is not solely about “computer work.” Students will learn two computer languages, one each semester, that they often use in their research with a professor. So CBHP is more of a research program. My son currently is doing research for an economics professor. Two of his friends are working with a chem professor. Another is doing research with an engineering professor.

As for minoring in more than one area, yes, you can minor in CBHP and another area, especially if you have AP/IB/dual enrollment credit when you enter Alabama. Many students double major. Some can triple major and still do the CBHP minor. My son’s roommate is in the Million Dollar Band, a section leader. He is a chem engineering major and is a member of CBHP.

Community service opportunities can be found in many places, not just Fellows. As an example, the Honors College is always putting out information about service programs. Freshman Forum and First-Year Council also offer service opportunities. My son plans to journey a second consecutive spring to Costa Rica as part of the Alabama Action program.
