I’m devastated and baffled. My child just received notice she was not admitted to the FGCU Honors College. She must have been among the first to apply, has a 4.82 GPA and earned one point below automatic acceptance on the ACT. She’s president of NHS and another club and a member of 6 different honor societies. What on earth more can a kid do? She’s a wreck. Thinks all her hard work is for nothing. What can they be looking for?
I am the director of an Honors Program (not FGCU). I have no idea why she didn’t get in (the common reason students do not get into my program if they have sufficient grades and scores is poor essays) but I encourage you to call them and ask. It could be a mistake (they happen) or they could offer a reason that makes sense. They might have an appeals process or there may be opportunities to reapply once she is a student there. But in any event, all her hard work was not for nothing. She’s the same smart kid she was yesterday! And I’m sure she’ll do well in college - honors or not. Good luck!
They may have had an overload of kids who were automatically admitted with the gpa and scores and just not had any spots left. As schools are becoming more popular, and FGCU is, more and more of the top students are applying and accepting. They too want the honors college.
It certainly appears while she exceeded the GPA requirement, she didn’t meet the test scores requirements. Did your daughter take the ACT more than once? If so, would super-scoring help change it?
