Does anybody know anything about the level of difficulty of Eng. 19 (Great American Movies, 1967-1974)?

Are they worth it? Hmmmmm. I think it depends. I took one that I thought was very interesting, but I also took one that was kind of a dud. Both were taught by the same professor. I didn’t like the latter one because it was more heavily discussion-based, and it was a bit boring listening to people make all these comments that lacked depth (ie, if you are discussing a piece of literature, you get people basically just reciting the plot. Ok, we all read it and already know what happened. It adds nothing to the discussion). I was already a fourth year by then, and I was amused that whenever I made a contribution to the discussion, the professor would find it really “sophisticated” or “well thought out”. Not really… some of the fiat luxes are REALLY just for first years, I feel.

So do these seminars usually meet way less than a regular class? And they have a lot lighter of a workload, right?

Some fiat luxes don’t care about attendance, and usually at most meets weekly for an hour. Some meet only a few times per quarter. There usually is no homework, except a final paper/project/presentation/etc., so the workload is very light. The objective of a fiat lux is to provoke group discussion on a topic that students and a professor think is interesting.
