What are Fiat Lux Seminars? and are they worth it to take?
I am an incoming freshmen, will taking Fiat Lux Seminars do anything for GE's, graduation requirements, etc.?
Thanks

They do nothing for you, but you get to learn some pretty interesting things and talk about random ****s, plus its P/NP so you don't have to worry much. Whether or not they are worth your time is really dependent on you prof, the students in the class, and the amount of cheese you can eat in 10 minutes.

they're worth it if you like them. they only give you units, and they're just mini-classes to help give you some variety.

plus side is that the profs teaching them tend to teach on subjects they are really interested in. minus is that it doesn't matter if the students aren't interested as well xD

I signed up for a fiat lux for the fall and I'm really interested in the topic. The class has 3 required readings. Now I will probably read since it is something I want to learn more about, but for me that's a lot of reading for a 1 unit class. How does the pass/no pass thing go? If I don't do all the reading can I still pass?

For GE's, ucla says one of the 1o courses must be like this seminar thing. Whats that, is that the Fiat Lux Seminar

phenomenon: a fiat lux is NOT the seminar required by the GEs. the seminar requirement is met by taking a class (5 units) that is denoted as a seminar. or, you can take a second writing II class to meet this requirement.

kutibah: fiat luxes have to have SOME work or there isn't much to talk about. if there isn't reading, then there's typically group discussions or writing. my friend took a fiat lux where they had to write a 5-page paper: now THAT would be too much work for a fiat lux! three readings isn't going to kill you. if you feel it isn't worth it, you can drop it later. and the P/NP grade is generally determined by attendance, not participation. miss three classes and you won't pass.

take a fiat lux! or two...
so much fun! and not a stress on a 3 class schedule

i took a screenwriting one and a chemistry one (btw neither offered this fall 2008 quarter...)

the chem one was great: always had 3 professors in the room and less than 20 students, listened to the professors argue about periodic tables (haha scerri)
screenwriting: soo much fun, creative writing, wonderful classmates and a great professor (ackerman)

fiat lux classes are a great opportunity and not a stress to your schedule
