Fieldston/Dalton/Horace Mann

I know people who have been accepted to Horace Mann with ISEE percentiles ranging from 62 to 99. But, I can tell you that they look for much more than just ISEE scores. They are looking for students who can bring something else to the school. They need to fill their teams, their orchestra and bands, their theater, all their publications, etc.

Especially their football team...

thats true.
they are looking for much more
which is probably why i got in, my interview went really well.
i'm just saying, im in 12 grade now and i STILL miss the school even tho i left 3 years ago. it has a very nice campus, really nice facilities and it put me at such a high advantage over the dumbasses at my current school i got to skip a grade in every subject.

I went to Horace Mann. I went to public school until fifth grade, took the test without studying and applied to Riverdale Country and Horace Mann. I ended up going to Horace Mann, "the pressure cooker of new york" and I truly loved it. I truly believe I got the best high school education out there. I also wouldn't say I was accepted because I could contribute to the newspaper or I could play an instrument that the orchestra was missing. I wasn't really big on extracurriculars, but I was intensely curious and participated like crazy in class.

I would say that the "survivors," (students who began HM in kindergarten and never left) were often the least intelligent and the most entitled. When they were admitted,at the age of 4 or 5, their playing with blocks and drawing pictures for the admissions people was not nearly as important as their parents' influence and wealth. The kids who came later, such as myself, couldn't use their parents as a crutch to the same extent.

The kids at HM are rich and spoiled, of course, but they work hard. Horace Mann students have so much work that they don't have as much free time as some other students in the Ivy Prep League. HMers have a reputation for being a little less gossip girl and a little more bookish. I must say that until about 11th grade, I felt immense pressure to conform to the fashion and monetary standards set by my peers, which was difficult considering that I was a financial aid student (I got really good financial aid).

All in all, I wish that the student body was a little more accepting of individual expression, but I am incredibly grateful for the education I received there, as well as the close relationships I formed with my peers and amazing, amazing teachers. I actually think Horace Mann has had a far more profound effect on my life than college has.

well said, Swellesley. I also believe that it is impossible for schools like Horace Mann to sort out the kids when they are 3,4 & 5 years old, and that the academic reputation of the school comes from the admission of students into the 6th and 9th grades. At that point, I think the school is generally looking for academic stars. Students get an amazing education there if they take advantage of it. But, you are absolutely correct that too many of the kids are rich and spoiled. But, not all of them, and it isn't fair to paint the whole student body with a broad brush.

what is the ssat score you need to get in to Horace Mann??

I went to HM and i miss it thinking of going back

just to say how hard it is to get in, I applied to dalton, trinity, collegiate, fieldston, riverdale, horace mann, and probably some other elite private schools in the manhattan area. I only got into horace mann and got wait listed at all the other schools. collegiate is probably the hardest to get into because they take about ten kids for 6th grade, and before that they only have about 50 a grade. Dalton and Fieldston really only accept kids who are into performing arts or visual art but have great facilities. Fieldston is a bit of a slacker school. When I toured there there were a bunch of kids who were sleeping in class. The worst out of all of those schools is Riverdale. They do not have the as good academics as Horace Mann, Dalton or Collegiate. If I had a choice Iā€™d pick Collegiate or Horace Mann because since Collegiate has a smaller class they get a bigger percentage of their grade into very good colleges. Horace Mann does have a much nicer campus though. Whenever my friends from collegiate come to horace mann to see a soccer game they are amazed by how beautiful and amazing the campus is as most people are when they first see the campus. I know I was.

Hi everybody. Horace Mann has GREAT academics, GREAT extra curricular activities, (besides football teamā€¦ not too good:() the people are a little bratty sometimes, and GREAT facilities. But, i have to say to you, children who come in kindergarten are just as smart, even the ones accepted in nursery school, compared to ones accepted at a later age. If you are not doing well, they will ask you to leave. So, you are incorrect about that fact. But everything else you said was fine! :)

hm definitely has great academics, but they have a rep of being ultra competitive among other nyc prep schools. i donā€™t know if itā€™s true or not (unsubstantiated, really).

These are all top schools and all will provide a wonderful education for a fortunate student. I attended Collegiate and my children are now up in RCDS and Brusnwick (NYC is a bit too long of a schlep). The important thing to keep in mind is finding the right fit. Even if Collegiateā€™s record is the best, it might not be the right school for your son (all boys school), so their results are meaningless. Remember, though these are competitive, youā€™re paying the bill, so make them sell the school to you, not the other way around.

What kind of isse/ssat scores are these day schools looking for?

the same or higher as boarding schools

My son was just admitted to 6th grade Fieldston, Horace Mann and Riverdale and weā€™re undecided, to put it mildly. Thoughts?

Horace mann is a very good school. congrats!

it really all depends on what your child is like-

horace mann - really academic
fieldston - artsy and progressive
riverdale- really athletic

^^^^this description is fairly simplistic.
Iā€™ve had 3 boys graduate from Horace Mann. If you ask a specific question, Iā€™ll be happy to try to answer.

friends seminary is definitely the best of all NYC schools
they have the best kids and best academics

friends is probably the worst schoolā€¦if you want to go to a school that focuses on academics,
go to trinity or horace, if u want to go to a more balanced school go to dalton, riverdale or fieldston, i got into everywhere besides trinity, (isee scores 6,7,8,8) no legacy
