Figuring out where AP DULA credits fit in

assuming that all the classes will transfer …

where do these classes fit in??

government (poly sci)
history (us and world)

my DD has a number of AP and DUAL credits completed, but i have run thru thee majors so far and haven’t found a place for lots them to fit in.

would government be a humanities elective?

or does history count as humanities?

she has 12 history credits available, but one of the engineering majors i was looking at only seemed to require 3 hours of history.

Hey Mike, if you look at this chart: [University of Alabama Undergraduate Catalog 2008-10](<a href=“Page Not Found | The University of Alabama”>Page Not Found | The University of Alabama)
it tells you what area each AP test gets credit under. So Government looks like it has an SB (Social & Behavioral Sciences) designation. If the major only requires 3 credits in an area and your D has 12, then I think the other 9 would fall into an elective category. Am I thinking right here, oh experienced UA sages?

What all does your D have? Are some both AP AND Dual?

You can click on the red tabs on this link to find out what courses fulfill which requirements.
[The Office of The University Registrar - The University of Alabama](http://registrar.ua.edu/curriculum/composition.html)

Humanities are like Literature classes (which are also L), Foreign languages, Philosophy classes, etc.

History counts as HI designation (see history below)

Engineering has a minimal number of Core Req’ts.

6 semester hours of written composition (FC).

6 semester hours in 300- and 400-level courses, preferably in the student’s major, approved for the writing (W) designation. The (W) designation indicates that one of the conditions for a passing grade is that students write coherent, logical, and carefully edited prose in a minimum of two papers, at least one of which will be graded and returned before midsemester. All (W) designated courses are taught and graded by instructors who have at least the master’s degree and preferably are limited to an enrollment of no more than 35 students. The (W) requirement must be satisfied with courses taken on this campus.

9 semester hours of humanities (HU), literature (L), and fine arts (FA) area courses. 6 semester hours are required in a discipline. A 6-hour depth study is required and may be taken in either HU, L, and FA or HI and SB. There are no mandatory general education requirements for literature or fine arts, except as required for a specific engineering program.

9 semester hours of courses in the areas of history (HI) and social and behavioral sciences (SB), to include 6 semester hours in a discipline. A 6-hour depth study is required and may be taken in either HU, L, and FA or HI and SB. History may be included in in-depth courses.

12 semester hours of mathematics (MA) and natural sciences (N) area courses, to include 2 hours of laboratory. Mathematics must be at the MATH 125 level or higher.

Either 6 hours of foreign language (FL) or computer (C) are required in addition to the humanities requirement. FL courses can count as HU credit if 6 hours of C courses are earned.

Government (political science) is a Social/Behavior Science (SB) in terms of the core curriculum.

This is kinda confusing. What is the difference between the 6 hours in a single discipline and the 6-hour depth study?

I’m so glad Engineering does all the advising work for you. All I ever had to do was look at my flowchart to see what courses I still had to take!

MY DD has these credits:

WHAP - 6 credits (AP/DUAL)
APUSH - DUAL - 6 credits
ENGLISH - DUAL - 6 credits
GOV - DUAL - 3 credits
CALC - AP - 4 credits (AP test not taken yet)

thanks, mom! that didn’t help at all!!! haha

these two statements … oh i think i get it now. so according to statement 1 all the history requirements would be covered by her AP/DUAL credits the SB would be covered by GOVT. correct?

Examples for Engineering Core

6 semester hours of written composition (FC).

AP English score 4+

**
This area tends to be filled on campus or summer school CC.
There are some wonderful Honors classes that fulfill these, so they could kill 2 birds with one stone.**

Any of the AP History course credits apply here. So, would AP Gov, AP Econ, or AP Psych.

12 semester hours of mathematics (MA) and natural sciences (N) area courses, to include 2 hours of laboratory. Mathematics must be at the MATH 125 level or higher.

AP Cal, AP Bio, AP Chem, AP Physics apply here

Either 6 hours of foreign language (FL) or computer (C) are required in addition to the humanities requirement. FL courses can count as HU credit if 6 hours of C courses are earned.

** AP, Dual, or CLEP in a foreign language would work here. So would AP Stats**

9 semester hours of humanities (HU), literature (L), and fine arts (FA) area courses. 6 semester hours are required in a discipline.
*This is kinda confusing. What is the difference between the 6 hours in a single discipline and the 6-hour depth study? *

I think 6 hour depth study means like taking both US History classes (I forget the time periods, but the first is like from the 1600 to XXXX, and the other is from XXXX to present. or something like that.)

I think the 6 hours in a single discipline means that 2 classes can be taken within the same dept, but they don’t have to be related courses. Such as: Intro to Philosophy and Philosophy Deductive Logic.

BTW…my son will be a TA again for Philosophy Deductive Logic, so if anyone is considering it, he’s very helpful with students who need help.

i am not on the same computer as before so i can’t check easily …

so according to these two statements:

9 semester hours of humanities (HU), literature (L), and fine arts (FA) area courses. 6 semester hours are required in a discipline. A 6-hour depth study is required and may be taken in either HU, L, and FA or HI and SB.
are there 18 hours of HU L FA HI SB required? i will have to look again! when i was looking at it, it didn’t seem like that many.

COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING CORE CURRICULUM/GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

To achieve a general education while pursuing a specific degree program in the College of Engineering, each undergraduate student enrolled in that college will construct a curriculum that includes coursework in the following areas:

6 semester hours of written composition (FC).

6 semester hours in 300- and 400-level courses, preferably in the student’s major, approved for the writing (W) designation.
[University of Alabama Undergraduate Catalog 2008-10](<a href=“Page Not Found | The University of Alabama”>Page Not Found | The University of Alabama)

Scroll down for engineering core.

WHAP - 6 credits (AP/DUAL)
APUSH - DUAL - 6 credits
ENGLISH - DUAL - 6 credits
GOV - DUAL - 3 credits
CALC - AP - 4 credits (AP test not taken yet)

So, it looks like Freshman Comp is taken care of - section #1 (what a relief!!! )

It looks like the AP WH and the AP US and AP Gov take care of section #4.

And, AP Cal will take care of some of section #5.

Your D needs to take Honors Bio with Dr. Caldwell.

is that bio 215?

BSC 118 Honors Gen Bio

What about AP Enviro Sci? Don’t see it listed so does that get no credit? That would be a bummer!

My son is in AP Environmental Science as well. During our March visit we met with an academic adviser who affirmed that UA does not give core curriculum credit for this course. However, he felt fairly confident that a student would be able to get elective credit for Enviro.

FWIW.

Those of you with AP Enviro Science should contact W. Michael George - University Registrar, and voice your desire for Bama to give credit for that exam.

Please feel free to contact me by phone at 205.348.2857 or e-mail me at michael.george@ua.edu.

For example, UCLA gives Geography credit for a 3, 4, or 5 on the exam.

i am not interested in getting a bunch of elective credit for AP/DUAL classes.

should i be?

i kind of want them to fit into the degree plan if possible.

there is not too much room in the degree plans for elective credits to count for anything.

Having the elective credit won’t hamper you from taking whatever classes you choose. I think Sea_tide will agree with that. He came into Alabama with lots of AP/dual enrollment credit. What it did was help him at registration or housing time.

The same is true for my son. He had 65 AP credits when he entered Alabama in the fall. He has priority registration through the Honors College, but it really was a priority when he got to sign up for classes the first day this spring. He had all but one class he wanted (that particular University Honors class only has an enrollment of 10).

The more credits a student has, the earlier pick for classes/housing he has. It also may allow you to double or triple major (something my son is doing).

The more credits a student has, the earlier he gets to register for classes and pick housing.

Mike…I’m not sure what your concern is. Is there a possibility for your D to get more credits in some way?

Having excess credits that don’t fit into a degree plan doesn’t hurt anything. My kids have lots of excess credits. It just helps them register early and get choice of housing.

For those who are rather fluent in a foreign language…such as Spanish, French, or German. If you take the placement exam, and place in a “high band” with your score, then take the appropriate class and pass it, Bama will then give you the credits for the lower classes.

My son was able to get 10 additional Spanish credits that way (in addition to the 3 credits from the Spanish class he took).

Even if you only place in the second highest band, if you take the recommended class and pass it, you’ll get the credits for the classes lower than that.

If you place in the highest band, but don’t want to take a 300 class, you can take a 202 class, pass it, and then get 7 additional credits for the lower courses (for 10 total credits  )

SEA_Tide got a bunch of extra French credits by taking the CLEP exam. That’s another way. :)
