filesharing (ie bittorrent) at vandy

do many students at vanderbilt use file sharing services like bittorrent - mininova, piratebay, isohunt - to download music or movies? does vanderbilt actively combat this sort of traffic? do they report it to the riaa/mpaa?

Several Vanderbilt students have been forced to pay the financial settlement for file sharing music in recent years. I think during S’s sophomore or junior year there were 6 who had to do this.

I used BitTorrent all the time, along with several other people I know. While it’s is somewhat harder to track torrents vs. peer to peer, it is still possible so be care. I just never downloaded anything super popular and prominent. Vanderbilt ITS will shut off your internet if you exceed bandwidth or about 10 gigabytes per day so watch out for that as well.

Vanderbilt has a thriving community of mojo users. If you’re not familiar with it, basically mojo allows you to share music & video files with any other mojo user in the network. It’s fantastic.
