I sort of picked communications as my intended major, thinking that I would end up switching anyway, but the school I've committed to only has a Film and Media program. Is this completely different, or do I have the same freedom of career choice that I would have with a communications degree?

I don't really know what I want to do, but I figured communications would have been a good, broad base for careers I might choose.

So basically, should I try this out or try picking something else [or just stop being so indifferent]?

To which college have you committed? To which colleges have you been accepted?

In general, communications is seen as a "fluff" major at all but a few colleges/unis.

Yeah, I sort of figured that out, which is why I picked it. Obviously I didn't want to plunge into something specific if I haven't shaped out my plans.

I'm going to University of Rochester, by the way.

I also was accepted to Cornell and BC.

The University of Rochester is a great school. Why not take advantage of that by taking a range of courses and then making your decision accordingly? Or maybe by doing an internship?

I only mentioned the perception of communications in case you had been admitted to someplace like the University of Texas or Emerson, which are very much the exception to the rule.
