I've been reading up on various film and television studies/production programs that are among the tops in the nation. A career in film production is something I'm really passionate about and I hope to attend a school that fits this career desire.

Ever since visiting Dartmouth routinely (because my sister went there), I've been in love with the school and its campus. It truly is a place I can see myself at. But that's beside the point. What I'd like to know is the quality and opportunities of the film/TV program at Dartmouth.

I've done some research online and looked at their program, which appears to be pretty extensive: Film and Media Studies Admittedly, though, I'm just sort of starting with researching colleges in line with my possible career choice so this program may just appear better than it is.

I'm from the northeast, about an hour from Dartmouth. I really am not sure about going to school in California, though those schools do have a reputation as being among the best in this field. NYU (the Tisch School) definitely intrigues me, but I just worry that it may pigeonhole me into a profession that I am only PRETTY sure I want, whereas I may get more flexibility elsewhere. So how's Dartmouth in this respect?

If anyone knows, let me know! Thanks!

I’m also interested in film at Dartmouth. Any help would be appriceated

Someone help out me and Scurrilous! haha

Film is a very interesting field in that its very “network-based” and there is a lot of vocational training. The good news about Dartmouth is the alumni network is super strong and very tight, if you go to an alumni gathering in LA people like Shonda Rhimes (Grays Anatomy creator) will show up. People really look out for each other and they will definitely do everything possible to help you. Harvard and Columbia also have a very strong presence in LA.

The bad news is in my experience USC, UCLA (west coast) and NYU (independent films) are definitely the way to go if you want deep immersion in film. The ivies and other top schools tend to teach lots of theory, USC and UCLA you’re living at a studio. They are just totally plugged into the film industry. This is one of the rare majors where I think a top “program” gives you the best shot, in most cases (any major from History to Biology) I’d argue the "top school’ is the better choice.

True, that seems to be the theme I’m getting from my research, which really conflicts me. NYU seems right considering it’s only a few hours away, but Tisch seems really demanding and I don’t know if I’d have the portfolio to get admitted. Ah, lots to think about!

Anyway, thank you!

To be honest I haven’t seen nearly as many successful filmmakers from NYU as I have from USC or UCLA. If you want to make it big in film I’d say NYU is a over-hyped compared to the clear demonstrated success of those two programs. I would say if film if your dream USC and UCLA are probably the only choices unless you are just into the “art” and don’t mind being a little poor (NYU),
