Film Major in Emerson College

So I got accepted into Emerson College for Film Major last week, and I was wondering if it really has an influence over the industry. My passion for film-making was only sparked when Senior year came, when I then hurried to finish my portfolio. So I did not really research thoroughly on Emerson College (and I admit I definitely should have), and only formed my opinion of it based on opinions of others. The opinions were mixed in their favor for EC, and I just wanted to know if Emerson College is an authority in the Film Industry as it proclaims it does, and whether or not I'd be able to survive there (seeing how I only got serious about Film recently and obviously does not have as much experience and/or skills as most others).

PS. I received the Dean's Scholarship if that is any indication of my skills or potential to survive in this industry.

Congrats on your acceptance and scholarship. Emerson has a strong technical department. Many students review their professors highly. Some complain that there are a lot of part time professors. I have a film student but she did not apply to E. I’m only relaying to you what she researched. Over all, Emerson has a good up and coming reputation in Boston. Good luck.

I believe Emerson has one of the strongest film programs in the country. And they have a very strong alumni network, the “Emerson Mafia” which really help alumni get jobs. Their semester in LA is a great opportunity as well. Congrats: you have been accepted to a top notch film school.

I recently got accepted into the Emerson film program as well. Congrats to us  Film is a new-found interest of mine as well; I submitted a terrible short film I made that my friend edited back in 10th grade. I have always wanted to act, but attending a highly academically rigorous middle and high school kept me from pursuing that, which I do not regret at all. However, writing is what led me into wanting to pursue a film-making career. Anyway, to answer your question…Emerson really is a distinguished visual and performing arts college, and its film program is so so strong. Many famous people like Jay Leno and David Cross went there. It’s known for its professors and like what muf123 said “a strong technical department.” I also have no experience with dealing with the technical aspects of film, like using a camera/rigs/etc and I hope to learn hands on if I decide to go. UNLIKE you, though, I was only offered a Pinnacle Scholarship of 3,000! I cannot afford to attend, so be very very proud of yourself for being accepted, and very grateful for that Dean’s Scholarship!! Good luck with wherever you do decide to go for college.

Thank you for your opinion, pmbeck, and I could really relate to you about the first part! I too found a new interest in film only after watching Memento in like last summer! Thanks to you, I’ve regained my confidence in Emerson College, and I really hope you also attend a college where you’ll have a great time!

Congratulation on being accepted. Your getting the Dean’s scholarship is also very impressive!

To your question: Yes. Emerson is considered good, even very. The school has good equipment, lectures and I believe that their curricular is well constructed. BUT I should mention it is not considered the best. It is not like UCLA, USC, NYU, Columbia, CalArts or UC Berkley which are considered the best in the world - with NFTS (London). Studying at Emerson would give you a great amount of knowledge and experience but you will need to compete with the students of what is called in the entertainment industry “film ivy league”, that benefit from being located in LA and NY - where the production companies are at.

That being said, you should remember that it is art, and there are no rules in art. If you present good records, high spirit and most importantly strong (or money making) films, they would take you without hesitation!

Best of luck!

Oh also, I would prefer to go to Emerson on a scholarship like you than NYU for example since later I wouldn’t be enslaved to loans and focus on making the kind of films that I want to make ;)
