So I got accepted into Emerson College for Film Major last week, and I was wondering if it really has an influence over the industry. My passion for film-making was only sparked when Senior year came, when I then hurried to finish my portfolio. So I did not really research thoroughly on Emerson College (and I admit I definitely should have), and only formed my opinion of it based on opinions of others. The opinions were mixed in their favor for EC, and I just wanted to know if Emerson College is an authority in the Film Industry as it proclaims it does, and whether or not I'd be able to survive there (seeing how I only got serious about Film recently and obviously does not have as much experience and/or skills as most others).

PS. I received the Dean's Scholarship if that is any indication of my skills or potential to survive in this industry.

Congratulations!
I too have been accepted into Emerson for Film. I also received the Dean’s Scholarship and Pinnacle Scholarship. As for the “authority” Emerson has in the industry, Emerson does not produce as much “notable alumni” than other top film. schools (NYU, USC, etc.). However, there have been some very successful alumni that have graduated from the film program (Seth Grahame Smith, author of Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and co-creator, if I’m not mistaken, of The Hard Times of R.J. Berger; as you can tell these are not films, but it technically still is “the industry”). Also, Emerson was listed as the number nine film school in the world by The Hollywood Reporter and mentions “Boston’s Emerson College’s film, TV and media program is so eminent that only one in six applicants gets in”. Another aspect that could serve as some indication that it has some authority in the business is that a campus is being built right in Hollywood and will be open for fall of 2014. From an information session I went to not too long ago, I remember the presenter saying that transferring to that campus will be extremely easy for undergraduate students.

I can easily tell you this: Emerson does not have as much of a success rate as USC or NYU, but Emerson is creeping up the list of being able to provide students with connections, and I’m sure within a few years it will be in the top 5 with USC and NYU.

PM if you have any questions and I’ll see if I can help you. I plan to visit on April 5th for the Picture Yourself At Emerson event, so maybe you could look into that also.

BTW, I don’t think the LA campus is planned to be a full-time campus, it is where you can spend a semester, taking some classes and doing an internship. They already have that program, but having an official campus will let them expand it a bit. Or at least that was my understanding. (My daughter was accepted to Writing for Film and Television)

Thank you! Your opinion has been a great help, and helped me balance all the rather negative reviews about Emerson College I’ve read on the Internet. Thank you for your input, and I think I should just think more about choosing the right college for me!

Emerson is the 9th best film school in the world. and yes during your Junior or Senior year I think you can spend a semester at the LA campus completing an internship. Emerson also has a variety of awesome clubs outside of the academic environment that you can get involved in. You said you don’t have much experience but I’m sure you’ll learn many of the skills you need at Emerson.
