Film Major Liberal Arts Colleges

Hello,
I know that the topic of film schools has been covered in many other threads (and I have looked over a lot of them), but I was curious if there anyone had suggestions other than the "top dog" film schools (NYU, UCLA etc..). These schools look great, but it seems that most of them are either in California (and unfortunately, I live on the East Coast and couldn't travel that far) or in a big city. So, are there any small liberal arts schools that have a respectable film program? Would it be a mistake not going to the well known film colleges? Thanks for any help!

I think many colleges offer film programs, but I don't know if any of them are particularly known for it. I have a friend going for film at syracuse, and one going for film at Rutgers. I think Drexel might have a fairly good film program as well.

Wesleyan and Vassar I would imagine to have strong film, including Bard.

wesleyan, and while not an LAC, Emerson.

One alternative to look at is a program in Video Production. It is very similar to a film program, you get to make lots of films, and the entire film industry is going HD anyway. My son is a senior in the Scripps School of Communications Media Studies program and has met very talented people and has been involved in 45 films to date. We are all very impressed with the program.

Scripps is at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. OU has about 20,000 students, but is know for EXTREMELY friendly students. The tracks you can specialize in are extensive (Audio Post Production; Digital Media: Special Effects, Games, and Animation; Management; Media and Society; Music Production; Video Production) - School Requirements | The School of Media Arts and Studies

If you have good grades/scores, you can get automatic scholarships: The Gateway Award Program: Ohio University Admissions

And if you are really good and very passionate about your craft, try the Honors Tutorial College with the same degrees, but with a very close-knit group of only about 240 people (about 60 admitted per year): Ohio University: Honors Tutorial College:Home

Many of his friends in the same program have had Hollywood internships. He did not go the internship route because he was usually busy (making films). For example, this past summer, he had a job making a documentary film in Nicaragua.

Yeah, Wes has one of the top film majors at an LAC. Vassar is also good, as is Oberlin.

Take a look at Chapman

I personally know vary little about film programs but there are a number of threads on CC that address your concerns:

Wesleyan has a great film program. Also look at Emerson in Boston.
