film related opportunities within CAS?

what opportunities does a CAS student have to study film? I am very interested in a career as a director but I feel uncertain that, given the low internal transfer rates to the tisch film school, I will be successful in transferring between CAS and Tisch. I hope to find a way to immerse myself in the film community as much as possible while at NYU and I was wondering if anyone on here feels that I could be satisfied and acheive my goal of becoming a director, even if I will not be in Tisch Film. Can CAS students help on Tisch students film sets? I am hoping that I will make some valuable film related business contacts even as a CAS student. sorry to ramble but any information about this topic would help. thanks

You won't be able to 'immerse' yourself in film exactly but there are classes you can take. Tisch has Open Arts curriculum classes available to students at other NYU colleges. It's definitely not anything like being actually in Tisch, and not the same classes as majors take, but it's really all that's available if you want this type of class. People call it Tisch 'lite'. If your goal is to be a director, why didn't you apply to Tisch instead of CAS?

Isn't there a new major available to CAS students thats like a joint major between CAS and Tisch? I believe its called cinema studies, and although it doesn't sound as hands-on as the actual film major in tisch, it seems to bring you a little closer to "immersing yourself in the film community." I think this is a major you need to apply for.

Does anybody here know any specifics about what this major offers? (whether its worth taking up?)

Burton, I going to be a freshmen film major. I am almost positive that if you want to help on crews you can and will be welcomed with open hands. You might start off doing crappy jobs (like the rest of us) but eventually you'll work your way up.

However, you won't be able to learn the advanced camera stuff, so if your goal is working with the camera (as a director or cinematographer), you should consider transferring. I know the chances are small, but if you make connections with professors, work on many shorts, and show your dedication, I'm sure they'll take you.

Oh, and if you want to work on my shorts, you're more than welcome.

Good luck.

thanks for the info safiamike, and keep in touch because i would def. be interested in helping on your shorts
