FinAid Appeals

money's a big issue. my two schools are NYU and a City University of New York school. NYU costs damn near 50k, CUNY Hunter costs about 5K (often referred to as 'the poor man's NYU').

I realize i must be one of many many people to flood the answering machines and waiting areas of NYU's financial aid office, but the fact is: there is no way in hell i can afford to go to NYU, and owe $120,000 when i leave (and without a masters!). I can't attend on what therye offering me. like many others, i have to appeal.

what is the right way to go about this? many people say it helps to have a bettr offer from another school in hand, which i could (Hunter is offereing me a full ride). I dont know how effective that will be (in my case).

My first idea is to call tomorrow morning. When that (it assuredly will) gets me no where, i've got to drag my parents down to washington square.

what are some things to remember? Do's and Don't's? stuff i should research? forms/documents to have in hand?

CUNY Hunter is no poor man's NYU, its just poor in all senses- academically, monetarily.........

oh, you go there?

I'd love it if someone could answer this question as well. :/

no i am going to nyu next year, but i know people who go there

I'm not an expert at this, but I did some bargaining when I was choosing from acceptances.

I'd say above all, be polite. Getting excited and yelling at people won't do much for you. Write letters, call admissions or financial aid. If you have a better offer from a comparable school or even a superb offer from a "lesser-ranked" school, that'll make a difference, but I wouldn't expect an extra $10k. Emphasize your desire to attend.

NYU is a great school, but it isn't for everyone. You've got to be on your feet about deadlines, and you'll find that some administrators will be really helpful and nice while others'll make you want to wring their necks. Good luck. :D
