I am aware that not everyone that auditioned for MT got into a program for performing. My own D only found out at the last minute that she came off of a waitlist and got into Elon for a BFA, otherwise she would have chosen an "alternate" major at a University that she would have preferred to go to for the Arts, but was not accepted. I don't think she was alone, and all of us who have been together through this gruelling process, know how very difficult it was to get noticed amongst so many talented kids.

I for one am very interested in where our talented MT kids are going, even though they perhaps did not get into their 1st choice schools or programs. Also what majors have you chosen if the arts were not available to you as a major? The beauty of most schools is that there are many clubs and "other" opportunities for performance, whether it be in radio, tv, drama or dance clubs, while still pursuing a degree that will only benefit you in your future. You too deserve to have a list, and I for one am very proud of you, just as I would have been if my daughter had decided on a more "traditional" education, supplemented and enriched by clubs of her choosing. I hope you post!

Melsmom,
This is a great idea and thank you for starting a thread on it. Each senior's plans for next year are as worthy and exciting as the next one! Many who are very talented in MT, go on to BA in theater or liberal arts (other majors) colleges and still continue to pursue their MT passion with the college theater cllubs/scene. Some of these students even go on professionally in this field and others maintain this as an interest in their lives.

I think there will be cases here where some are going onto academic college degree programs....but there will be some cases here where students only applied for BFA programs and may not be going to college next year at all. In fact, we have had several in that situation here in the past who have shared what they have done...some took GAP years and continued training, did shows, had a job, etc. I don't know if those in that situation this year will have a plan in place yet but I hope all will consider posting here.

I think on our master big list of final decisions, which you have so wonderfully maintained, there ARE some students represented THERE who are going to college for a BA...either in theater or liberal arts. I can think of a couple off the top of my head. We don't have any of the stories yet here of those pursuing either a GAP year or alternative plans to college (for this year's group). I'm glad some families in the past have shared those stories here. In fact, several of those students are now headed to programs this year after those experiences, very cool indeed.

So, let's hear from everyone not going for BFA programs....we need some stories of other paths and learning opportunities...

You gave me the idea Susan, especially when you mentioned a girl on Bdwy who decided to go to school at Princeton for a totally unrelated major.
The other list of Finals is for performing, including BA in theatre. I thought this list could be for those that may have chosen the academic route. I can only think of perhaps 2 on the other list, for Ithaca and maybe Vassar, that would not be performance/theatre related. Although they may be minoring.
This would be the place to share and celebrate their decisions. I know that if some of these MT CC "Academic Major" kids are at the same schools as our MT CC "PA Major" kids, that they will share more than just a school name. They will have so much in common, and could potentially be very good friends, and even roomies (can you tell my D doesn't have one yet?) with others from CC in different majors.

Oops, Vassar does have a drama major, so that stays of the other list.

Ya know, I don't think I was the one who mentioned a girl on Bdway from Princeton...did I ? I don't think I know of one, LOL. However, I know that students at schools like Vassar, Harvard, Yale, Brown, and many others, do go on to careers on stage including Broadway. The ones I know going to these colleges, CHOSE this path, and it wasn't due to not get into BFA programs. Actually, one example is a very good friend of my D's is heading to Yale in the fall and got into places like NYU/Tisch/CAP21. I know a boy from Brown currently on the RENT tour in the role of Mark (taking a leave for his final semester). I know of others from Brown working professionally in theater upon graduating. Dani, who used to post here, is heading to Yale but is very interested in MT and has done a lot in the field. My D has several friends who chose the liberal arts or BA path, rather than a BFA, though they would be competitive applicants to BFA programs. Do you all recall Jamimom, a regular poster on CC for a very long time? Her son was to be a freshman at Yale this past year, after the whole BFA audition circuit.

Then there are a few people I know on CC on this forum who are doing BA paths after not being admitted for the BFA but have exciting opportunities ahead at those colleges.

Anyway, hopefully some who are not doing BFA's who are either doing BA in theater, BA in another major, doing theater as an extracurricular in college, or not even going to college but pursuing other training or work will post here when they are ready.

Oh, I see it now, you were commenting that the girl in Little Red in Philly, and now on Bdwy with Fiddler, was a Freshman at Princeton (I was sure I saw it somewhere!) I guess technically you don't know her though. Regardless, I do hope others share their many routes of success!

OH...THAT girl...i do recall saying that. However, I didn't think of it just now because she was on Broadway BEFORE Princeton, LOL. On this thread, I was thinking more of who went to certain BA/liberal arts colleges but went on to do theater or Broadway (I thought your example of a Princeton student was someone who had graduated and I didn't know anyone who fit that...but I misunderstood I guess!). The girl who was in ITW and then Fiddler on BWay is from Philly and is at Princeton, yes. I don't personally know her but my D has the same agent. I was wracking my brain about who you meant who had gone to Princeton and I don't think I know anyone who has graduated Princeton! NOW I get it.

I think this is an awesome idea! I'll be the first to share, I guess. I'm going to be attending Ithaca in the fall with an English Major/Theater Minor (minor technically yet to be declared, however, because I can't get anyone to respond to my emails!). I'm kind of creating my own, more extracurricular, musical theater major on the side. I hope to find places to take dance and voice outside of school and to be in many, many of the non-department run shows on campus.

this thread is AWESOME. i'm glad we're getting a chance to post our decisions, too!

after considering a million alternatives, i've decided that the best practical choice for me is to stay home (in vermont) and live/train/work/save/hopefully perform and try again for round 3 next year.

i've already started voice lessons with a new teacher (next lesson on friday, YAY!) and rehearsals for my first show start mid-june. i've got a job fixing ridiculously expensive pianos for the summer and am still waiting to hear on another show for august. dance classes don't start for a little while, but i'll definitely be taking ballet and probably either tap or jazz, but maybe both.

i have no idea how this year will turn out -- hopefully well. i don't want to feel like i left all my friends for nothing, which i don't think will happen. maybe third time is a charm for me, who knows!!

as i've said before, i've auditioned for a bunch of the schools listed at the top of the MT page, and i'm glad to talk about my experiences with any of them. i feel that since i HAVE done the whole audition thing twice (soon to be 3) i'm a pretty good resource in terms of audition experiences, looking at schools as a whole, etc. and i DID the whole "going to college and re-auditioning" thing, so i know ALL about that first hand.

i'm definitely sticking around -- i still need a LOT of help from the CC folks as round 3 comes along!

i can't wait to hear more "alternative" decisions :)

My d is actually finishing up her first year at Barnard in NYC. She is a "dancer who sings" but also really wanted a strong liberal arts education and agonized over her decision about where to attend school. Barnard has proved to be the absolute perfect place for her. She is working to earn her degree in neuroscience with a dance minor (won't actually be able to declare the minor until the end of next year, though) and has taken several auditions in the city as she was able. She actually does have a job in a production in Lancaster, PA this summer (enough to scratch the MT "itch" and earn her summer money) and she did very well in the open call for "A Chorus Line" on Broadway last January.

churchmusicmom~
We'll be in Lancaster for a week this summer at a Nat'l Dance Competition (one of two.) Maybe we can catch the show...We're scheduled the week of July 4th. Fill me in if your D is there then!

churchmusicmom-
What show is it?!! We live just outside of Lancaster PA...we go there often. If you could give me the details that would be great! We have gone to shows and dinner theaters in lancaster...really enjoy it.
Congrats, and I do understand about wanting to have her home.

It's "Crazy for You" at the Fulton Opera House. She is one of the Follies Girls and is very excited!

Our family is hoping to travel up there during the last week of the show to see her (probably June 21-24 or so)....I have to be back here by Sunday because, well you can probably guess by my screen name, my job involves being around here for church!

We will definately check the show out! We would love to see Crazy for you...and the Fulton always puts on top notch performances! Lancaster is a great place to spend time! (great little quaint shops, good food!) I always look for a chance to go down!
Wishing you and your d the best!!

Thanks! That is nice to hear! She really loved the director at the auditions and felt the experience would be a good one. Now that finals are over...well as soon as she gets the stress of packing and moving done with!...she will really be able to relax and enjoy this! We are looking forward to seeing her in the show and to visiting the area. We have never seen that area of the country...

Ok I'm actually going to answer the question the thread relates to...

I'm going to Rhode Island College for a BA in musical theatre performance. I'm also heavily considering a double minor in music and dance. If not both, definitely dance. I'd really like to get all of that music theory knowledge, and I also need an extensive dance background for what I want to do. Each discipline is about 20 credits, so I'm looking to accomplish those within the next 4 years (God willing). I'll probably have to take some summer classes if I want to graduate on time. It's a small sacrifice to get the right training.

I'm also attending unifieds. If nothing works out, I'll just continue at RIC with the theatre major and double minor. I feel like I can get the same training. It will be sad no to have a showcase, but maybe I can do that for grad school. I'm crossing the fingers!
