Final Decision

All right here are my current stats http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=380751

Everytime I talk to people about applying ED to Dartmouth, they have different views. Some say that I will be definitely rejected due to my financial aid requirement (which is almost full ride). Some say I would be better off if I apply ED somewhere else.

I just wanted to discuss with all of you guys whether I should go ahead and apply ED or not.

Is Dartmouth really stingy with aid? Are there any Internationals out there who were admitted under ED with aid?

Thanks

Dartmouth is not at all stingy with their financial aid, nor does financial aid enter into the admissions process. So if Dartmouth is truly your first choice, go ahead and apply ED.

You can get an idea of what Dartmouth would provide in need based aid from the calculator on their web site. The amount of my daughter's aid was within a couple of hundred dollars of what the calculator predicted. However, it appears you are an international student, which means you are not eligible for certain U.S. Gov't aid programs. I am not sure how this would affect your package.

Ajayc: It's only August. Of course you should try to come to a conclusion, but it is only August.

I know one isn't supposed to play the game this way, but be sure you don't "waste" your one shot at ED on someplace where you don't have a snowball's chance in hell. That said, I don't think that's the case for you at Dartmouth; I think you're a contender.

ajayc:

I'm not sury many of us here on cc have experience with international + finaid + ED. Plus, as sybbie has noted, Dartmouth is not need-blind for overseas internationals.

Last year, I counseled a neighbor to apply ED to P'ton. She was schooled in the US, but was a resident of Asian country and an international for admission purposes; she was full pay. She had phenomenal stats and ECs, and was deferred. But, in the RD round, she was accepted at Harvard, Yale, & Stanford, in addition to Princeton RD. I can only surmise that P'ton wanted to see all of the International apps prior to making their decisions. But, in the end it hurt their yield since she accepted Harvard's offer.

VeryHappy: I know its just August. But I have my SAT in Oct and SAT II in Nov with my mid year exams coming up. So I need to start working on my essays also.

Dartmouth has been my first choice since a long time and I am going to apply ED! :D

Thank You all for your feedback. :)

Cheers!

bluebayou: True. That is what everyone is telling me that most probably they will defer me. So that they can have a look at all the apps. But the hope is still alive ;)

Dartmouth is a wonderful collegiate experience. At an info session this past summer, the Adcom said the ONLY way to signify it is your #1 school is to apply ED. But, again, I don't know how that impacts internationals that need finaid.

Best of luck to you.

Neither do I. I think I will apply and play along.

Best of luck ajayc.
If the adcom people ever read this Dartmouth forum, they will find that you are a good candidate . You show so much knowledge about Dartmouth and such enthusiasm. Plus you already have the Dartmouth spirit.

ps. there is a thread here on cc where an international student is applying for a loan from Sallie Mae. Says that Sallie Mae has loans for international students. To qualify you have to be accepted by a college here first.

Thanks Foggy!

Well Dartmouth is not going to admit me unless they provide aid or I can fund myself so I guess taking the loans will be out of the whole scene.
