final list IS out HOT!!! pls help a desperate boy XDXD

I just came up with my final list, pls let me know whether it's reasonable and individual chances

cornell (engineering EARLY DECISION)
Wash U St Louis (engineering)
Michigan Ann Arbor (engineering)
Tufts (engineering)
Carnegie Mellon (info system/engineering/business)
USC (engineering)
BU (engineering)
U of Illinois urbana champaign (engineering)

I go to one of the most prestigious prep school in the nation (Hotchkiss School).. school mean SAT: 1400 endownment of 365million....... our school sends about 25% of the graduating class to ivies and stanford and many to top LAS like Williams and Middlebury....

I started going to hotchkiss my sophomore year transfering from a local school in hong kong..my sophomore grade sucks as i was adjusting to the totally new system (my college advisor's gonna explain that in her rec) and i hv strong upswing trend since then......have one of the most vigorous math and science curriculum (ran out of math courses after junior year even school offers up to college 2nd year)...... almost qualified for Mathematics Olympiad last year (7 points from the cut)..... Decent SAT scores...APs and stuff...grades are okay....school doesnt rank....gpa system is kinda wierd so i will just include quintiles here.......
my sophomore year: 3rd quintile ....junior year: 2nd quintile (all unweighted)

ALSO, DAD went TO CORNELL GRAD SCHOOL FOR ENGINEERING AND MBA

you are looking great...enough safeties and the reaches are within ur reach...extracurriculars are good...you do have some community service, it's not all math problems all the time

most interested in the ED cornell and also a breakdown of chances of my list would be nice
also another question is does defer in ED mean basically a reject, or less chance than RD or just the same as RD?

only 10 pct of deferred applicants get accepted into RD.

that's why stanford rarely defers (4 pct).

Well, I'm no expert, but here's my opinion:

cornell ED - match
Wash U St Louis - match/high match
Michigan Ann Arbor - not sure where Hotchkiss is...OOS = match / IS = safety/low match
Tufts - match
Carnegie Mellon - high match
USC - low match
BU - safety/low match
UIUC - IS = safety / OOS = low match/match

Yeah your chances are looking very good....you know you really don't have any "reaches" to speak of, IMO. But if you're happy with the list, more power to ya.

Tufts is a slight reach.

oh....more input pls
thx

dude i just realized u have C's...2 of them...colleges don't really like them. based on that, i think tufts and WUSTL are reaches, cornell is a slight reach due to ED status and legacy, and Car-Melo is a low reach as long as ur not applying to school of computer science.

No, a C from hotchkiss is fine...its one of the top 10 privates in New England i believe. Right up there with Deerfield and Exeter

I would think the fact that the OP attends Hotchkiss and has had a considerably challenging courseload would balance out the two C's, which are in fact C+'s. The Cornell legacy + ED easily makes it a match, high match at worst. Add to the legacy + ED the test scores, which are in the top 25% of Cornell applicants, and it would be silly to call Cornell a low reach.

Cornell - high match
WashU - low reach
Mich - low match
Tufts - low reach
CMU - safety
USC - low reach
BU - safety
UIUC - low match

USC = Southern California, yes?

ya USC = southern cal....how is carnegie mellon safety though?? and does grad school legacy count as legacy??

more input pls
THANKS SO MUCH

Cooldude, how do you know only 10% get accepted in RD?

Cornell doesn't publish those stats. In fact, they don't even say what percentage of ED Engineering applicants get accepted!

i think he meant in general

PLS PEOPLE ...thx for the previous replies but i sure want more opinions

btw, USC is indeed southern cal

grad school does not count as legacy
you have as much as a chance as anyone else who applies good luck

just wondering people, do i need more safety matches or reaches???

if so pls recommend...
also I would like to continue having ur excellent inputs on my chances
Thanks

plesssssssssssssssssssssse

more safeties

cornell -- i'm going to guess you will get waitlisted
Wash U St Louis -- not sure
Michigan Ann Arbor -- match, but out of state is hard
Tufts -- accepted
Carnegie Mellon -- accepted
USC -- accepted
BU -- accepted
U of Illinois urbana champaign -- don't know anything about this school
