finalised my list for RD! chances for an international?

Posted a chance thread quite a few weeks ago, now I've finalized the list of colleges that I'm applying to.

Asian male from Indonesia, studying under scholarship in Singapore
School: very competitive (not the most competitive but we do send a considerable number of students to top colleges, ie. ivies, oxbridge, etc.)

Standardized tests:
SAT I CR 700,M 780,W 600 (1st seating, retaking in december, hoping for 2200+)
SAT II Maths 2 800, Physics 800, Chemistry 800

Rank: should be top 10%
Rigor of curriculum: maximum amount of courses taken, taking GCE A-Levels (results are out only at April)

GPA: the system in Singapore is kinda different, they use a university points system. here's my result:

School final year exam: 85/90 (3.78/4.0), predicted result (which counts more I think): 89/90 (3.96/4.0)

ECs and awards
-Photography Club, president (won 3rd place in interschool competition)
-Harmonica Band (performed for school concerts, charity performances and got gold award for youth festival central judging)
-performed for Chingay parade (some big annual parade held in Singapore)
-Multimedia Club member (silver award for interschool web design competition)
-Singapore Maths Olympiad senior category bronze medalist
-Won 1st place for islandwide engineering quiz
-Various distinctions and high distinctions for minor science and mathematics quizzes

Community service:
-tutored maths for fellow students
-donation drives
-usher for charity concert
-30 hour famine camp

Work experience: none (foreign students in Singapore are not allowed to work)

Internships: regrettably none either

Recommendations: good to very good

Essay: very good (according to my seniors who's currently studying at ivy league universities in US)

Applying to:
Columbia U Fu Foundation SEAS (financial engineering)
UChicago (mathematics)
UC Berkeley (pre-business)
U Michigan (pre-business, trying for Ross PA)
Carnegie Mellon Tepper (business)
NYU Stern (business)

My safeties would be in the Singapore universities.

So yes, let's get to the point, what are my chances? I'll chance you back if you want.

Could you quote me your raw Prelim/predicted A-level grades? =p I am not sure what 89/90 means =p

I suppose you have a decent shot at all those universities if you are not asking for financial aid from the universities themselves, especially UMich, they really like Singaporeans for some reason or another.

frankchn

ah, i thought it might confuse people since most are not familiar with singapore's system

Prelim: H2 Physics A,H2 Chemistry A,H2 Maths A,H2 Econ C (bleah), GP B , H3 Modern Physics Distinction
Predicted: All As, except mother tongue which I already had a B

Our junior college, (ie. VJC haha) uses a different grading system aka B is 65-69, C is 60-64, D is 55-59, etc. whereas most other JCs that i know of has B 60-69, C 55-59, tough luck.

89/90 is because my higher mother tongue is B

Nope, no financial aid required.. daddy's scholarship this time =P

r u under the VJC IP?

ok man..........u will get in everyone...........sat scores that good ,gpa rockin, ecas cream..............and no aid.

you don't need safeties

hraghuvir:

Nope. I got in through the old system, plain o-levels and all that PAE/JAE stuff. VJC IP does not offer scholarship for Indonesians AFAIK (only for ppl from PRC and India I think). Their curriculum and classroom environment seems to be fun though.

Megaadi:

Well that's encouraging although I don't really think that is the case. There are tons of amazing ppl here in Singapore so competition is going to be really tough. However, some of them do favor the UK univs more due to convenience in application process.

Not needing aid is a big advantage over other Singaporeans. Your chances may be as good as a domestic applicant's.

you should apply ED to berkely. berkely does not allow deferrals so Singaporean males wont apply with you. This will hugely increase yr chances

greennblue:

I hope?

hraghuvir:

Ah but berkeley does not offer ED, only RD that is due at 30th nov. Even so, I have already applied ED to UPenn Wharton which I've been told that it's going to be an uber reach with my current score (low SAT and average grades). Oh well, one can only dream..

Bumping up!

ah ok. still, good uve applied to berkely. u stand a high chance of getting in.

Nice, nice, looks all set. A higher SAT would be like a cherry on the cream.

bumping..........

bump yet again

tomo88,

Have you looked into Northwestern's MMSS? MMSS, Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences, Northwestern University
It's a unique program of integrating math into social sciences and is highly regarded by many firms. http://www.mmss.northwestern.edu/students/Internship_Directory.pdf
It also automatically fulfills the prereqs for Kellogg certificate program. http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/certificate/images/brochure200708.pdf

Sam Lee,

I have read about the program. Sounds very competitive to me. My worry is that I might be applying to too many universities such that I will have to rush through my personal statements (and inadvertently writing mediocre ones in the process), so I am not really sure whether I should apply. Do they have the stats of people entering MMSS to benchmark myself?

MMSS isn't super competitive to get in. It's a rather self-selected program. People who aren't comfortable with math wouldn't apply so it's not like there are tons of applicants. In the past, some people even joined the program after they got accepted to NU and all they needed to show is high math score which you already have. This is one of the programs that NU wants to use to retain top admits who would otherwise go to other schools.

The average SAT for MMSS was 1460 two years ago. The stats is probably slightly higher now but you have 1480; so you have nothing to worry about.

By the way, I think the info on the website is a little outdated. I think they now admit 30 freshmen and 30 sophomores instead of just 20 from each group.

Here's where I found the average SAT
http://www.mmss.northwestern.edu/alumni/AlumniNewsletter2006.pdf

Thank you for the info, really appreciate it. Guess, I haven't looked hard enough.

Anyone else willing to chance?

Just in case you haven't noticed, MMSS is an adjunct major. Most MMSS students major in econ. Their econ dept is ranked #8 by US News.
