Well, I got home Saturday and I found a fairly thick envelope in the mail from Michigan. I was so excited! Finally a scholarship! I wanted to know how much it was, but was very dismayed.
In fact, it was just an application for a scholarship at the Telluride House. If I get in, I have to live at this Telluride House but my room and board are covered. However, I have to fill out an application, and write five essays!
So, is anybody else in the Telluride House? What are your experiences in it? Did anybody else get this same packet? How selective is it? How much would living in it be like living in a dorm?

Forget it, just go to Florida or Penn State.

I got this package, but decided not to fill it out because I may not be going to Michigan in the end...and I don't really want to live in the telluride house even if I do go there. Its much too much work just for that, and I'm getting lazier by the day through senioritis...

Plus I got into the honors program, so I'd rather live in the Honors housing...

telluride is sweeeeeeet

that house is HUGE and you have a personal chef...

it doesnt sound that great. i wouldnt accept if i were you. 5 essays?! no way man. better off going somewhere else.

I'm applying for sure, only because I did a Telluride Association Summer Program last summer and it was...flippin awesome. As for how selective, i think there's about 30 people in the house total, and it opens up like 3ish spots a year...so that's how many people get in. I don't know.
i don't think it would be like a dorm at all, but rather a really intense, close, intimate living experience with some really intellectual people. if i get in (crosses fingers), i might opt to live in honors housing my freshman year, then move in afterwards.

the five essays is pretty hardcore. aiee.

Like how competitive is this admissions process. Will a 2290 SAT and 4.0 UW GPA make me really competitive? And are the people in there really geeky? Do they sit around the dinner table and discuss Plato or Sartre?

5 essays for about $8,000.

Again, this logic got into UM?

dsmo is correct.

well, if we're just considering the monetary aspect of getting into the house, 5 essays for 8000 doesn't seem much, but can one really peg a price on the experience that one will receive?

the people are not geeky. they're wonderful and amazing.

oh, and as for how competitive it is...
I can tell you that it's harder for people to get in if they haven't been a part of Telluride Association's summer program, IMO, because they simply have less of your information, essays, etc. And I think they look at a lot more than your grades, hence the five essays.

$8,000? For five essays, that's not bad at all, although 5 essays is a tall order, definitely.

No, its 5 essays for a chance to get in.
So, darkamaranth, you have some experience with Telluride?
Is it coed?
How strict are the rules that people set?
Are you allowed to party?
Do people in Telluride party the same way as everybody else at UM?

i got that too, but decided not to apply. The five essays totally turned me off, not to mention, I think I'd like, if not need, the more social dorm experience my first year.

Nobody at Michigan parties. The rules are strict, drinking is not allowed. The football and basketball teams are terrible. They are dominated by teams like Penn State and Florida quite frequently.

You will not be able to find a job after getting out of Michigan, unless you want to be a pizza man.

I have to agree with dsmo.

The social life resembles Liberty U or BYU. Alcohol is prohibited on campus and Ann Arbor is a dry town.

For some reason, I panicked for a second.. I think I ran through a quick what-if situation. lol It was ugly.

dsmo, you're a funny one. Now, seriously, back to the Telluride house. The more you don't want me to go there, the more I want to. I want to be stuck in the same class with you once, and have the two of us assigned as lab partners or something. that would be great.

Why do you want to go to places that would **** others off and make them miserable? Are you one of those girls that thinks that's flirting with guys, and becoming closer? I'm willing to bet that you haven't had a boyfriend since the 8th grade.

In all seriousness, ummm
Telluride House is co-ed.
THere's only like 30 people, so strict guidelines and rules probably aren't really necessary, although if they think you're really hard to get along with and you're not going to be very considerate, you definitely won't get in.
telluride people are probably no different than the average college student, except they are so much more passionate about what they want out of life, and what they want to contribute to the community. They're also really into the whole intellectual pursuit thing, but it definitely doesn't mean they don't want to have fun.

that's just my anecdotal experience, though. i'm probably not the best knowledge base when it comes to telluride house.
