D just announced Wooster as her place to go. It has been a long hard process. We just got acceptance from Univ of Richmond and had to choose between Denison, Wooster, and Richmond. There is just something about Wooster. It was one of the first colleges we visited and in a lot of ways most impressive. I am so excited for her... Of course, now I have to catch up on what to do at this point, because up til now I couldn't think about anything except where.... I always felt it was the place for her but wanted her to reach that decision on her own. She did.. Yeahhh:)

Congrats!!!

Congrats to her- it must be a relief! I’m narrowed down to College of Wooster and one other school (possibly a second if I choose to keep Earlham on my list, I’m debating). I wasn’t as sure about it before, but I’ve started to understand the academic curriculum and social life there a lot more lately and I am liking what I see.

What helped with our final decision was a website **************.com. The student body of most colleges voice their opinions of their college on there, good and bad. I was suprised at what some students really felt about their college at other places. Wooster students for the most part seem to really love it there other than a few town problems which to my D and myself were minor problems.

okay blanked out e-mail address… how about students review (no space) . com

my D went to Wooster a few years back. She had other acceptances and slightly better finaid packages. She flew out to Ohio late in the process and loved the school. It was still difficult for her to turn down the other colleges but I think she knew right away which school was right for her. It worked out well

Congratulations, ps13! … I’m a bit jealous, because my daughter will be graduating from Wooster in May, after four incredible years. Our whole family loves that school and will miss it so very much. … Bravo, for your daughter’s choice! Well done. :)

It makes me sad that my D won’t be able to attend Wooster or another private school (she got a Trustees merit scholarship from Kenyon yesterday). Unfortunately, with her stepfather being figured into the FAFSA and her own father’s unwillingness to pay, and me unemployed, it is not affordable. Fortunately, she got a great scholarship elsewhere that we are happy about. We will try again in a year with S, who is a bagpiper, and hope that having two kids in college will allow the FAFSA gods to smile on us.

Hey I love wooster… But many people here are telling me that colleges like wooster are awesome but self-contained…Will this affect my future job prospects/ studies in anyways? Thanks in advance…

^ I doubt it. Wooster has an amazing grad school rate and the I.S. kind of makes you integrate with the outside world, so I’m sure you will be plenty prepped for grad school or a career or whatever you do after Wooster. Actually, I feel of all the colleges I applied to (many LACs with good reputation), Wooster is the best for job preparation and definitely among the top end for grad school preparation. That’s actually one of its “pros” on my pros and cons list to decide.

I think that’s the last thing you’d have to worry about with Wooster.

Daughter’s been accepted at Wooster and at Ohio Wesleyan Univ. Any advice or insight to help her decide?

Both great schools. Ohio Wesleyan has more of a Greek presence. It’s also pretty close to Columbus if you want to go there to shop or party. I think there’s a bus route to take you into town (Columbus). Wooster is a more contained campus. Not too many students go to Cleveland or Akron, but you could if you wanted. Wooster’s prettier, if you ask me. You should visit both. Did you get similar packages? Both are members of the Ohio Five – Oberlin, Kenyon, Denison, Wooster and Ohio Wesleyan – pretty much in that order, in terms of selectivity. You will get a lot of personal attention at these schools. Also, strong alumni networks. Good luck!

Agree with ici. … But, having a daughter who will soon graduate from Wooster, I’m a bit biased. It’s been the best four years of her life so far–personally, socially, academically. An absolutely amazing place. But, different strokes for different folks. Your daughter should go to the school that feels like the best fit for her. Good luck!

Thanks for your thoughts about Wooster vs. OWU. We did love a lot about Wooster and it’s looking better each day. Similiar packages offered from each. (Denison’s pkg was not as good.) Both visits to both campuses were impressive. Good luck to your daughter Hindoo, glad she had such a great experience at Wooster.

I think everything ici says pretty much rings true. I could be wrong but OWU might have some better sports teams (except football/basketball) because I know a lot of athletes at my school go there. Although Wooster itself is known for some pretty good sports teams for A DIII school. Wooster has good science programs but in general Wooster might be stronger with humanities & social sciences while OWU has good science programs & business. They are both great schools, it depends what you want from a college.

When did the tour this summer of Ohio Five- D automatically ruled out OWU. It seems like a great school. What she did not like was actually the tour itself. It seemed more like a help session to get admitted into any college, not really highlighting the benefits of their college. Therefore, it did not stick out in her mind. Also, it is more of a linear lineup and have to cross a busy street to go from one end of campus to another. It was a long walk to lunch. However, that could have just been representative of that day’s presentation. We left there learning alot about college admissions, but not much in way of gearing us towards their school. I wanted her to finish her application, but she said she did not want to. Again, that may not represent their great qualities of a school.

Yes, OWU is laid out in a long line with dorms being at the opposite end of the campus and across that busy street from the science building. That did not look good to D as she is interested in science. Nice to know that science is OK at Wooster as I had heard it was not a real strong major there. We had a wonderful private tour of the science building at OWU from a professor.
