my son applied and got accepted but we’ll probably say no - the cost is just too high…

I loved reading the original post here. It does sound completely honest, and makes you wonder about other programs. The fact that we have to face is that colleges and universities are money making enterprises. There is always someone making money pretty much at every step of the way through the college experience. They are expensive to run, so bringing in any money possible is what they do.

Just look at the programs that get more focus. You wonder why they build a new stadium or sports complex for the football team instead of giving the fine art program the new studio space that is direly needed, its because football brings in the money.

The thing that used to drive me crazy while in school was the new book requirements. I thought it was a blatant scam… They put out new editions of the same book. And you have to buy the new one. It might be a tiny new chapter that is new. There is no way they changed the whole book. They just add something, who knows if it is crucial or not, and you have to shell out full price for the new book. When everyone knows the old book(maybe only 1 year old) is appropriate.

I’m actually a future junior taking the Creative Writing Advanced course for session II this year. I never really looked at other programs, and I was looking for opportunities to improve myself as a writer…Though I’m relieved other members wrote that the creative writing programs were intensive and worth the money, I feel disappointed that so many people are accepted every year. It’s sort of like a slap in the face after I worked excruciatingly hard on my personal statement and polishing up my short stories -_-. I thought a school like Columbia would at least take the time to be selective in its students (even if it is a summer program.)

I guess cost is not an issue for me. I don’t look at myself as rich or spoiled, but I think my parents are willing to make the sacrifice for me–I already go to an expensive private school. My opinion on Columbia diminished a tiny bit, but I guess the experience depends on the student. My mother actually has to leave the country to get a tumor removed, so I have to go anyway. Kind of having doubts on going to the Journalism convention in June though…

I am! Im taking the Creative Writing Advanced course.

SangyRocky, I’m sure you’ll love Columbia - I did a Masters there and the faculty are very strong. Their summer program was at the top of my son’s list, although probably more because of the New York location more than anything else However, since he’s not yet sure what he wants to study, we’re going for a program with more variety over the three weeks and at half the price. If the cost isn’t a factor and since you are so sure about Creative Writing, you just may have found the perfect program for your own needs. Keep that in mind as you surf around this site - only you can figure out what’s right for you after reading all the info and opinions out there!

SangyRocky, You said you are going for the advanced writing course, do you have to do the Introductory course first for this? My son has been offered session 1 for Creative writing Introductory and session 2 Creative writing advanced. He is a future junior…we are wondering whether to choose one or both as the program is so expensive. He’s going to be a commuter student and hopefully will be away from the partying scene and get something worthwhile from the experience. I am really disappointed by all the negative reviews. He is wait listed on the Harvard SSP and we’ve still to hear from EPGY stanford in early May. He also got in at Brown. Can anyone suggest which is better?

Hi! I’m going Session 2 this summer for language and identity. I went last year but commuted. I took Issues in Biological conservation and LOVED IT. I had so much fun and we went camping. (Be warned, if you take this course, camping is kind of gross after 3 days but all around fun) I am dorming this year and I am looking forward to all the city has to offer and to experience new things even though I’m just a train ride away from home. Respond if you’re going! I’d like to know some people before leaving! :)

anyone going in 2012 ?

Our high school counselor told us this:
Bright, motivated, talented high school students need to apply for TRUE by acceptance only, competitive and ideally FREE summer programs. These are the ones that prove you worked hard and deserve to be there; and acceptance is not based on getting the application in and cutting the check. It is based on MERIT.
Govenor’s School and such are the things to really shoot for. If you can’t get in, THEN pay and go someplace else. But do know that going to Columbia or others that take almost anyone who applies and pays does NOT help with college applications.
Duke TIP, at least, only allow kids with certain SAT/PSAT scores to get in. They have to be certified gifted and they are a little more selective. Some others? Just know that they often do accept pretty much anyone. That does not mean one’s experience will not be good, just know what you are getting.

I am!!! What are you taking and which session are you going?

taben, D was accepted to Summer@Brown, which I take it is not that hard to get into and is very expensive…but she was then given a full scholarship to attend, which IS that hard to do. She’s not doing it for college app reasons, though it would be nice if being a Dean’s scholar there gives her a bump. She’s mainly thrilled to be living on Brown’s campus for 3 weeks and taking a class that fascinates her. She’s only a freshman now, but already looking ahead :)

I’m doing session 2 creative writing.

Is anyone doing the Architectural design and theory session II course this summer? The supplies list looks really long…

I’m doing session 1 preparatory college option

there is a group on facebook for accepted students for session II this summer: [Log In | Facebook](Columbia University High School Program Session 2 NYC 2012 | Facebook)

I’m doing session 1 this year as a non-residential student, but my friends are enrolled as residential. Does anyone know if it is going to be a problem for us to be together, given that non-residentials aren’t allowed in the dorms or the dinning hall or the activities for residentials?

This was the most fantastic course ever! I just got back from Session II nanotechnology, and it was the most amazing thing. I think it really depends on the course you decide to take in the end. I got lots of lab time that was also being used by doctoral and post-doc students. We had speakers that were big shots in the science field talk to us. And the mentors (TA’s), and professor were all awesome. In a class with 28 students and 5 faculty, it was an EXCELLENT ratio! The food did suck, but if there’s one place that you can take it, it’s at Columbia, because you’re in the middle of the freaking city! Definitely recommend to people looking at these fields.

Well, I just read this post and I laughed my socks off because it was so funny how you described it. I do apologized you stay at Columbia was horrific though. But anyways, I did enjoy my stay at Columbia when I had a program there this summer. And the food was not all bad lol but then again I did not eat much there though lol, probably 2 times out of the week.

Hi there,

I was accepted into the theoretical physics program for session 1 and engineering design course for session 2. Ive started to get worried over the comments on lack of intensive teaching and educational benefits.

Have you, by any chance, heard about the quality of the physics and engineering design programs?
Are these programs really worth the money in terms of experience and academic satisfaction?

ALSO if its not worth spending over $10k on 6 weeks at Columbia, what other alternatives are there out there from which i can really LEARN a lot?

Really would appreciate any comments
THANKS!

Hey I just got accepted into the Business and innovation program for session II this Summer? Is anyone else going? I’d love to meet anyone planning on attending and have some friends when I land! And has anyone taken any business classes did you like them?

Thanks!
