I taught at a school where we could not give a cumulative final exam on the last day of class, but we could give an exam that only tested a portion of the material. That exam might be “final” in that it was the last exam the students might take, or it might precede an actual cumulative final exam given during finals week. Confusing!

I have no idea about my D’s exam schedule; in fact, I don’t even know all of the classes she’s taking. I do notice that twice per semester, in the middle and toward the end, the number of text messages drop off precipitously.

We have a two day “study break” before one of our exam cycles in the fall, but nothing for finals-- we have regular classes up until finals week. During finals last semester I had something like eight papers due in nine days and exams, and we weren’t given the prompts for the papers more than a week in advance so I had to get it all done at once. It was hell, but that’s college for you. It isn’t always fair.

S’s reading period is the Saturday and Sunday before finals week. All finals must be given during finals week. The final exam schedule is posted before the semester starts, and is based on the class schedule (for example, all classes taught at 2:00 - 2:50 p.m. MWF will have the final exam on Monday, April 25, 3:30 - 6:00 p.m.).
