Microeconomics

These two are gpa killers at IU. And you will probably learn just as much at a cc because you will be in a small class. Finite and Microeconomics classes at IU tend to be huge or taught by people whose first language is something other than English if the class is “small” [small finite and micro classes at IU are about 80 students; the regular sized sections are 250+]. Chances are your cc will also have a business law class that will transfer to IU for credit for L201. That’s a good one to get out of the way. You should be able to find a class that will transfer to IU for CMCL-C121; Kelley accepts CMCL-C121 as a substitute for X104.

You would probably want to take X204 at IU; you will get a lot more out of it than at a cc.

If you live in Indianapolis or can get there the only six times that the class meets during the summer sessions, take A100 at IUPUI in the second summer session. It is extremely easy there compared to IU-Bloomington and there are lots of seats left. As an incoming freshman, you will have to apply to IUPUI (rather than be a transfer student from IU-B), which will cost $50.

In order, I’d say take the following:

1) ECON E201–there are some tough professors (like Olsen) that teach this at Indiana, and the average for this class is kind of low, while generally, this is not that tough a course at other schools.

2) MATH M118 (Finite Math)–This course is a bit tough at Indiana, but it is not as tough as the first one on this list.

3) BUS X204 Business Communications–this is a fairly basic course at IU-B. Stuff like writing e-mails, correspondence and reports, using grammatically correct English, structuring business reports. You really need to take this at IU-B so you do stuff in later classes the way they way they teach it to you in this class.

I see that bthomp1 and I cross-posted–but we agree on what you should take (although we differ on which should be #1 and which should be #2–perhaps I’m favoring ECON E201 first since my own son took that off-campus–at the University of Virginia and got an “A” on it there).

Thanks, Cal and Bttomp. I will take the Econ, the Finite Mth is filled. bthomp1 I did not find C121 or X104 when looking at the IU available classes to transfer…did I miss something on the credit transfer. I did find L-201 no classes.

Looked under Bus, Law, and others where are they hiding that?

CMCL C121 is listed in the department Communications & Culture on the Credit Transfer Service website. C121 is Fundamentals of Speech Communication. The basic speech class. Just about every cc offers the basic speech class. Business majors are allowed to take BUS X104 or C121 to fulfill the entry-level I-Core speech pre-requisite. You won’t find X104 in the Credit Transfer Service website.

From the 2008-2010 Kelley Bulletin [footnote #2 at the bottom of the page]:
“CMCL-C 121 may be substituted for BUS-X 104.”

OK thanks, trying to decide if I should take Econ and C121 over summer.
