finance major or econo major

I want to be a stock trader, investment banker or Financial Engineer.
I don’t know which major i should choose. Finance or economic. suny buffalo or suny albany? which one is fit for me.
Does suny albany have finance major?

Good luck breaking into that racket if you’re not going to a top school. If you want to work in finance, major in finance.

I agree with Zhanger. Honestly, I dont think it matters whether you pick finance or econ but I would highly advise you pick a math minor or math dual major. On another note, you really really really need to research the job path for becoming an investment banker because it’s going to be tough (and I dont mean school). I’d say other than big law, it’s probably the hardest industry to break into without a big-name school on your resume. There’s a reason investment bankers have a huge starting salary and it’s because they want to attract the best and smartest and work them at least 80+ hours a week.

This is my advice for you, choose the finance because that’s more practical and will cover what you need to know. Forget about minoring in math or second major in math, you don’t need it and it won’t help you. Pick either of those colleges based on where you want to live or attend for 4 years, it doesn’t matter. Why? Because the big IB’s recruit from a few choice east cost schools, you need to get a high GPA and then go to grad school at a TOP school, once there, you can get a masters in Econ. A undergrad in finance and a MBA in Economics from a great college. How does that sound? It won’t be easy, its a lot of hard work, but for the bright and ambitious, it’s doable.

Binghamton has a really cool inv. banking program…if you are a top student there, you might make it.

Do you want to be a liberal arts major or a business major? Economics is a liberal arts course of study. Finance os a business course of study which will include a business core curriculum with classes such as intro to accounting, IT, business law, management etc. I would take the time to look at the curriculum for both majors and see what interests you. I would also suggest that you search online yourself to see what majors are available at what school (if you google “suny albany finance major” you will probably get an answer quickly). I agree that it is unlikely you will end up in investment banking etc. from those schools, but finance might be the more employable option overall.

If your mind is set on that career path then go with finance. You won’t learn the same financial modeling skills in econ. I also am not completely sure where people are getting the impression that you won’t be able to pursue a career in IB simply because you are not at a target school, as I have met plenty of colleagues that have done so. It is definitely going to be more difficult for institutions like GS and JPM but there are many mid-market and boutique banks that have a wider recruitment selection.
