Finance Major

I am currently planning to transfer from a community college to a University for fall of 2016. I am a Finance major. I am hoping for UF but I need to have a back up school. Would FSU be the best next bet versus say UCF? I am looking for best job placement into a banking setting while using other resources such as networking. Not looking for a job to land in my lap. I ultimately will end up going to b-school for MBA later but that will done at a top 25.

FSU, UCF, USF and FIU all have solid programs. FSU is a bit higher rated, but any of these schools would be fine. Make sure you include FIU’s program in your search.

Good Luck!

FIU is too far south for me. I’m stuck between FSU and UCF as second choice if I do not get into UF. I have to have a back up. I have to get an A in my MAC2233 to hit the min prerequisite as I am currently at 3.47 due to a bad start in school. Its an A in that class or UF is off the table. I know that going back to B-School after a few years will offset my undergrad school but still looking for the better school to get me further to where I want a career in which is consulting.

Finance majors at both schools (FSU and UCF) do well. It’s really up to your preference between which school to choose. FSU is a bit more prestigious, and is more like your typical college campus/town, while UCF is based in a great location (Orlando).

Good Luck!

I agree with @Gator88NE recommendations. I would recommend that you take as much accounting courses at UF (or at any of the other 4-year institutions) to supplement your finance courses or double major if possible. I know of at least 3 UF Finance graduates who went back to other Florida 4-year Universities (2-FIU, 1-FAU) due to being unemployed or underemployed. All three went back for an accounting degree and are now gainfully employed. However, they have large student loan debt associated with their second bachelor’s degree!

Graduating from UF does mean you will land a banking position of your choice. A significant number of these UF finance majors end up at organizations where they have to get their series 6 license, cold calling are required and a big part of their pay is commission-based. A number end up performing poorly and are forced to seek employment elsewhere.

@Jamrock411 Every school has a few people who are unable to find jobs after graduating. Fortunately I do work for a corporate where I could lateral to another position if I ended up in that situation. Given that my end goal would be top 25 MBA for consulting or PE, where I went to undergrad wouldn’t matter. I know you can get into consulting from undergrad but it is fairly difficult especially coming from a non target school.

At heavily recruited schools like UF, large employers will filter out students with a GPA below a certain level. The kids with 3.6 or 3.8 GPA will have plenty of opportunity to interview at national firms. Those with 2.8 or 3.2 GPA will have to settle for a local/regional firm or roll the dice on a commissioned position. Accounting is somewhat different as once you get a CPA, that become the biggest filter for employers, not the undergraduate GPA.
