I am transferring to NYU Stern next year ...

I have always thought that I like to major in marketing, but my family wants me to major in finance (probably becoz of the prospect of earning great $)

So I have a second thought about majoring in marketing. I am good at Math and I am pretty analytical, but I am not sure if I am that interested and ready for majoring in finance...

What would I do as a career if i major in marketing or finance? And what will I learn in both majors? How can I choose which one I am interested majoring in?

I don't think we can decide for you. These are two entirely different fields, so you're going to have to decide which one suits you better. You could try Google to find stuff about each major.

This is a quite dated perspective, but quite some time ago it was the case that the MBA program there was quite a bit stronger in finance than in marketing. In fact it was a top school in finance, but the school's overall rating was thought to be brought down largely due to its weakness in marketing.

There were more finance recruiters than marketing recruiters on campus. Etc.

This of course does not mean that someone interested in marketing cannot get a good education in this field at the undergrad school, or get a good job subsequently.

Northwestern was the really good place for marketing.

I don't know if any of the above is still valid at this point in time.

Nope, not too late at all. One of the core classes is an intro to finance course. Hopefully by then you will have figured out whether or not you like finance...GL!

Most people actually major in finance, not marketing. Some people will even tell you that the whole point of NYU Stern is its finance program and that if you do anything else, you are wasting your time. Your family has good reasons for recommending a finance major. It is clearly Stern's strongest major, and yes, it is arguably the most lucrative. However, just because you don't do finance doesn't mean you're not in a good program because many people major in CPA Accounting, policy economics, or marketing, and they get good offers as well. Although you would be wise to major in finance, you don't have to if you want to do marketing. It's really up to you. I would, however, say that the finance major is most competitive.

Like botangers said, in your second year, you will take a course called Introduction to Financial Markets. If you like that, you can major in finance and take courses like corporate finance.

Stern is a great school, and you are lucky to be able to go there. I personally recommend finance, but once again, take the intro course to see if you like it.
