usc is requesting my parents' 2010 tax reform, but my parents haven't received it yet. all the email says is that it wants the info submitted as soon as possible. this email was sent to me almost a week ago, so im a little worried that this could be a problem. has anyone else received this email?

The due date for parent and student tax returns is March 2nd [USC Financial Aid - Applying & Receiving Financial Aid - Undergraduate - New Students](http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/applying_receiving/undergraduates2/newstudents.html) , or as soon as possible thereafter. USC will send out requests over the next week to all financial aid applicants who have not yet submitted them - so it isn’t just you :)

If at all possible, mention to your parents that this year, getting the taxes done as soon as possible would be very helpful. USC will not calculate your package until the tax returns have been faxed in, and it will take some time after they are received to complete the package. For some taxpayers, they simply cannot file until later - in that case, your aid won’t be negatively affected, but your package may be presented later than the others - generally financial aid packages are presented the first week of April.

The problem with the later package is that you will not have all the information you might need to make a decision about where you will attend school before the commitment deadline of May 1st, 2011. If that happens be sure to contact the schools you are still considering and ask for an extension (in writing) of your commitment deadline. USC will grant it if you have not received your package.

Good luck!

alamemom: Has USC changed how it asks for info? It looks like the financial aid documents now use USConnect and when I went there, it asked to download student tax return but for the parent, it had me fill out a form with the same info. When I went to the document library to download the W-2s, nothing is listed. Has this changed or should I just fax the parent tax form and all W-2s?

Thanks for all your help over the years!!!

On the USC financial aid website (linked above) it still lists the parent and student tax returns and W-2s as required for 2011-2012. I don’t know about USConnect - I don’t use it . We have all our tax documents here (not at USC with the student), so I print cover sheets from Oasis and FAX 'em in.

USC will accept them any way that you get them there, so if you want to send them electronically you could scan and attach to an email if the download doesn’t work. You can also snail mail or hand-deliver (our student did that last year - we mailed her her tax return to be signed, and she copied and and dropped it off at the financial aid office).

Thanks for the kind words :)

This helps a bunch. My dad doesn’t typically do them until march/april, because he’s away most of feb/early march. Perhaps he’ll do it earlier for me this time

alamemom: when I go to the financial aid website and click on My Documents, for continuing students it only will take me to USConnect and there it will not allow me to enter using the latest version of IE or Firefox and there is nothing for parent tax form or W-2. It will not let me use anything other than USConnect. I did fax everything to the finaid office but without the cover sheets, only with student ID on each page as directed. All this is different than last year or even two months ago. I did send finaid an email asking how to download using USConnect since they only allow older versions of IE pre-version 7. I am waiting to hear a reply.

FAXing them has always worked just fine for us, so yours will no doubt be fine, too.

I have suggested making cover sheets when the download doesn’t work and the bar-code covers won’t print so many times here that I always wonder if when they get stacks of tax-return FAXes with home-made cover sheets that they must process by hand if they curse the name “alamemom…”

Let us know what they tell you!

I was wondering which pages of my parent’s tax returns need to be mailed? I was just planning on mailing it to them or emailing it to them, But i don’t know which pages? I heard from my friends that its just the first 2 pages with all the summarized info, but is there more?

Does anyone know about american citizen living abroad. My parents don’t have w-2 or 1099 because they work abroad. What do i do when usc asked for it? I tried both email and calling but neither is answering.

WorriedJrGirl - submit all pages of the return and all schedules - in other words, all pages that you sent to the IRS need to be sent to USC. In general, worksheets do not have to be sent because they are not sent to the IRS with your return, but if the worksheet specifies that you should send it in, be sure USC also gets a copy.

superdoo1 - I posted a response on your thread about that.

Good luck!

When I clicked Parent’s 2010 Tax Return on USC financial aid page, it had me input all the information from my completed 2010 1040 but did not ask me to send in the actual return. Should I do so anyway? (I’m currently on hold w/ USC financial aid office with an estimated wait time of 15 minutes or longer, so I figured I’d see if anyone on this thread has the answer while I’m waiting.)

Hmmm… this may be something they are in the process of changing, but as of right now, the USC financial aid website still says to submit parent and student tax returns, including all schedules. It does say to “log in to USConnect and follow the instructions,” and “Submit information regarding…,” rather than “send us your tax returns” - which is what it used to say. So you may be okay with not sending them in. Here is what the Fin Aid site currently says:
[USC Financial Aid - Applying & Receiving Financial Aid - Undergraduate - New Students](http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/applying_receiving/undergraduates2/newstudents.html)

alamemom: that is what happened to me. I had to use USConnect. Because my browsers do not work or work sporadically with USConnect (it does not support the latest ones), I faxed everything to be safe. But using a different computer (my work computer), you enter your tax return and W-2 information now rather than download the tax return or W-2.

Thanks for the information, alememom. I spoke w/ a Fin Aid rep and was told to send in the return + W-2s in addition to filling out the online information at USConnect.

Next question, if I electronically filed which means I didn’t “sign” my paper return, do I need to sign the copy I upload to USConnect?

Thanks for the info! I will post a note there that the copies are needed on the FA FAQ thread, too.

Hmm… We filed online this year, too - your idea to sign the printed copy that we upload or FAX sounds perfect - that is what we will do!

THANKS!

I just went online to see what kind of info they were looking for when submitting the Parent 2010 Tax Information form online - and the instructions indicate that you don’t need to send in the paper forms unless randomly selected by USC:

Instructions:

Please complete all questions. Indicate “0” or “Yes/No” where applicable.

Enter a negative value for any notation of a loss (example: -1000)

Please input all figures on this form exactly as they appear on the 2010 IRS Federal Tax Return. The Financial Aid Office may randomly select your file for verification and you may be asked to submit a full copy of the 2010 IRS Federal Tax Return. Any discrepancies in the information submitted via this form and the 2010 IRS Federal Tax Return can potentially reduce the amount of aid for which the student is eligible.

I would imagine this helps them cut down on paperwork - and if something looks questionable in the online version they will request a copy.

I’m hoping to get this finished by tomorrow…

Updating again. I completed the Parent 2010 Tax Information form online last week and today there was request at USConnect to upload the actual tax return and specific tax forms and a Parent Income/Expense form. So, I guess after you submit the Information form, USC decides if they need your actual return or not. This is quite an involved process. Hope it pays off :)

I was prompted to submit my parent’s tax return in less than 24 hours. I wonder what drives them to pick certain people? Nothing on our tax returns suggest significant wealth or non-wealth.

I believe all financial aid applicants will be asked to submit tax return copies - they have requested them from all applicants in the past.

We faxed parent and student tax returns and W-2s last week and received confirmation emails for each submission. I’ve been keeping an eye on USConnect and am concerned/confused.

Parent and student tax returns are still listed under “Required items.”

Student return is listed as pending, I can understand that.

Under received items it says “page 2 of parent federal tax return.” Does this mean they did not receive page 1 and supporting schedules, etc? (Received items also include FAFSA, Profile, Profile corrections, and parent W-2s.)

I have thought of calling because I want to be sure everything is in before the deadline, but hesitate to bother them at such a busy time.

Advice?
