For the people who have called in and gotten an extra couple grand, what have you said? I would imagine you would have to be pretty convincing

Ha- and I know two students that were accepted to NYU with (they claim) $20,000 a year packages and they are not accepting because they did not do their homework like asking their parents if they would pay the difference or borrow the difference. Both students proudly said “I am not going into debt for any college”…They actually thought they would get a full ride to NYU or other schools in NYU’s tier or below…HA! so I would not be PO’ed at NYU I am upset with people that don’t prepare for such a major decision in life like choosing a college. These kids in a sense were accepted over other kids that were turned down that would have jumped at a chance to go to NYU and go into debt…I know this is a major duuuuuuh to the regular CC posters but I just had to vent- sorry… this is the reality of the college admissions game that is revolting to me…

I called the Office of Financial Aid on Friday and just asked if it would be possible if I could have a little more money or aid. He said that he’d put in an appeal for me, and I would be contacted by Monday (today). I checked online, and I got an extra 2K! It was pretty simple.

Haha that’s awesome! Sounds surprisingly easy. Did the person you talked to have to go look at their records to see how much financial aid they had already given you?

Yeah, he asked for my NYU ID number and looked up my file, but he didn’t say much else. I’d just give them a call - it’s worth a shot!

Will do. Thanks!

question for breakablegirl:

were you given this 2K in scholarships that would reduce some of your loans, or was this 2K a scholarship that reduces your efc (or money that you would have to pay now)?

my 2K in appeal money reduced my plus loans by 2K.

hey i was wondering when they will notify me about the appeal. I called wednesday and they said 2-5 business days and now its monday and they still haven’t contacted me…so any ideas? thanksss

there’s a lot of red tape, you just have to keep hammering at them. just don’t do it every day or every hour.

Ya, I’m not gonna lie I totally called them before they called me. haha I called the next day and they told me right over the phone my appeal went through.

The 2K was taken from my “Suggested PLUS Loan.” They added a “Chancellor’s Grant” to my package worth 2K. Hope that helps!

yeah i actually called them today but they told me that they would call me whenever they had decided. i wonder what exactly is taking them so long?!

call them back. there’s 50,000 students so they may forget. it’s red tape.
