Today I read this in Cornell's FAQ for international students.

Q: Is financial aid offered to international students?

A: Yes, a very limited number of aid awards are issued to international students every year. These may be partial or full scholarships based on the financial need of the students and their families. To apply for international financial aid, you should submit the International Financial Aid Application, included in the International Supplement, by January 1, to the Application Processing Center, East Hill Plaza, 349 Pine Tree Road, Ithaca, NY 14850-2899. Do not send forms to the financial aid office. International financial aid decisions are determined after admissions decisions are made. Criteria include academic excellence, geographic diversity, and potential for campus participation and/or leadership.

Does this mean that if i would apply for financial aid as an international, it wont hurt my admission decision? That, for example, I can be admitted but not offered financial aid?
Cuz they say that FA decisions are determined after admissions decisions are made...

I am sure Cornell is need-blind for International students, which means that it will hurt your admission chance if you apply for FA.
However, if you are accepted, they will provide FA just as they would provide FA for a domestic student.

NEED-BLIND? You mean applying for FA does not lower the chance for getting in?I'm sure I heard from my teacher one year ago that it was need-based for international students. When did it change?

I'm also an international student and, I'm afraid I've missed the chance for applying FA...Do anyone of you know if i can apply for FA when i get into there?Or do i have to fight for the scholarship?

there is no way that Cornell is going to be need blind to internationals. I am more than a 100% sure. They are NOT NEED-BLIND FOR INTERNATIONALS!! please give me the source if you think they are.

yea i agree...cornell is NOT need blind toward internationals...the only ivys that are need blind for internationals are harvard, Princeton and Yale..NONE other ivy league schools are

Most schools in the US are not need-blind for internationals. I'm sorry to say, but they only have a limited amount of money to provide to students, and almost all of it goes toward US students. Cornell's Site, however, says that they are need-blind for ALL applicants, so I'm not sure. But they also say that there's only a limited few awards available for international students...

Rather contradictory, in my opinon. Good luck!

i have a question that is similar to lzx's question; can we apply for financial aid in our 3rd or 4rth year? I ask because I'm also an int. student and got accepted ED (which means no fin. aid) to Cornell. My sister will be going to uni in about 3 years and then it will be difficult for my family to pay for both of us.

cornell "is" need blind towards internationals but does not gaurantee to meet your need
say u have two students one super strong asking for aid and another just strong and not asking for aid, then they will admit the super strong candidate. but it is not sure that they will fund him which depends on cultural diversity and many other factors. so admission decisions are made without regard to your financial status but they do't guarantee to meet your need. in simple words u might get accepted without financial aid even though you had asked for it. it is a bit confusing and stupid, but it is true!!

Is there any international on this board who got admitted to Cornell with finaid? (and how much did (s/)he get?)
... or anyone who knows of such case?

Cornell is need-blind (applying for aid will not affect your chance of admission).
Yet, it is not need-based for almost all of the accepted applicants (paying for the amount you can afford). Each year there're 10 to 15 intern'l students awarded aid. (for this figure, I went to International Student Center on campus to ask the officer over there).
Admission office will take care of your admission applications.
International Student Center will take care of financial aid application although you mustn't send it directly to them

So, don't expect fin aid from Cornell. When I came there, intern'l kids (mostly form Korean and Hongkong) are everywhere!

I've heard of one guy from Korea with amazing stats who got about $30,000 in aid from Cornell. Which goes to show you, Cornell is need-aware for International students but will meet full financial need if admitted.
