So I received my financial aid summary from Purdue back in February. It says they’re giving me $5,500, which are comprised of only loans. However, my family’s need is approximately $22,000. Does Purdue not give any gift aid? Where/how am I suppose to get the rest of the money?
Note: I am an out-of-state student so my cost of attendance is close to $43,000.
Unfortunately, each school determines “need” based on their own formulas.
Because you are OOS, you have to pay full fees. They are not going to subsidize a non-tax paying student because the state’s budget wouldn’t allow that.
Most public universities do not provide financial aid to non-residents because the state needs the money.
You are full pay and the money has to come from the bank of Mom and Dad.
What did your Net Price calculator indicate when you looked at the costs before applying?.
First of all, Purdue is a public college in Indiana. They have no obligation to provide financial aids to OOS students. Second, they do have merit aids that offer to top students even from OOS. Nevertheless, there is likely a gap even with merit scholarships considered except for the very top students.

OOS publics charge high OOS rates for a REASON…your family does NOT pay taxes there. WHY would they bother to charge high OOS rates if then they had to reach into their very limited FA funds and cover those high rates??? If they were going to do that, wouldn’t they just NOT CHARGE high OOS rates???
The Indiana taxpayers aren’t going to provide aid for an OOS student. They would get pretty angry about that, right?
Did you run the Net Price Calculator BEFORE you applied?
Purdue has never been known for being super generous to OOSer’s . . . with good reason as mentioned above. Plus Purdue attracts a decent number of internationals.
What are your instate affordable options?
it also said we’d need $22,000
If your family can’t afford the cost to,attend Purdue, you need to find an affordable option. Is there one in your acceptances?

What did?
Anything that computes that you have a financial need of $22k means NOTHING to 99% of schools.
Schools don’t magically have extra money just because modest income students apply…right?
It doesnt’ start raining dollar bills when high-need students apply right?
Indiana taxpayers aren’t interested in having their taxes raised to pay for OOS students, right?
So, where is the money supposed to come from?

You can’t buy the Mercedes…you need to find a Toyota. That’s life.
Now, what are your Toyota, Honda, Ford, and Chevy choices?
