Do any past students have info on financial aid at Rose? Do they offer merit scholarships-I can't find it in their brochure--if so, what is the range?

My son is accepted, but we have never been there. I don't want to visit until we get financial package, but that is going to be cutting it so close to decision day!! I just wish I had an idea. I don't want his package to be all loans. Our EFC is pretty low-I know we can handle that much.

I have looked a lot into this. I talked to a financial aid person the last time I visited Rose and she said that they have merit scholarships that can go to 17,000 and then the other financial aid really just depends. I asked what percentage they typically cover and she said usually about half of the tuition is covered by the institute. I hope that helped.

We just got our financial aid packet in the mail yesterday. Yours should be arriving soon. It was a combo of merit aid, a small grant and the rest loans.

We got my son’s on Saturday March 20, and it was a $15,000 merit grant, $5,000 need-based grant that said it would vary with our finances and Rose’s-Hulman’s, an $1,800 Catapult grant that I’ve heard is for all four years, and a bunch of loans. It didn’t say whether the merit grant was a four-year thing or just the one year - that makes all the difference! I guess I need to call.

The merit and need and Catapult combined didn’t add up to the difference between COA and EFC, so this makes Rose-Hulman more expensive for us than the schools that can meet need.

arghh, now I wish we would have done Catapult–didn’t realize it would help with financial aid. These numbers are not looking good–cannot wait unitl this afternoon-. I hope ours really comes today! I want to schedule a visit , but wont do unless this is even a possibility. I want this to be over with!! Our EFC is very low , so I already know they wont meet it. I just hope they come a little close–will let everyone know this afternoon.

okay, i came home early to get the mail.
26k–seems to be the common number. My son is excited, but I am not–i don’t think we can do it. I told him I have to think. I am really quite upset. I don’t know really what I was expecting , but I just don’ t think this will be enough. Still waiting for admission decision from CMU and total package from Penn State and RIT ----but he really wants ROSE!!

I called about the scholarships - the merit scholarship and the Catapult scholarship are for the whole four years, assuming the student remains in good academic standing. So, for us, possible but expensive.

It is what it is. Rose is expensive and it’s not like everyone here comes from upper class families that can spot 40K/year no problem; not at all, folks come from all walks of life. It’s a huge investment, but you get some pretty darn good returns on it if I may so so myself. See the latest statistics on placement and average starting salary for the numbers.

Yes, I know Rose Hulman is a wonderful school. My son loves it, and so do I. I’m not Yikesing so much about the cost of Rose Hulman, but at the thought of any 22-year-old, for any reason, having that much debt. It’s scary. Not to say that it isn’t “good debt” and a good investment and all that, but it’s still scary.

One thing to remember is a lot of other engineering school…you will be taking that 5th year. When we looked at other schools U of IL most engineers go into that 5th year. The reason is not being able to get the classes you need.

My D is finishing her Junior year at Rose and has never had that problem.

Make sure when you compare schools and talk to older undergrads and find out if they had problems getting classes and have to take that 5th year…EXTRA COST of tution and lack of income.

The 26k is merit and grant and work study. But I worry the grant will go down when my older daughter graduates==she is a jr. at BYU. I worry about anything that is changeable like the grant , because the FAFSA does not always represent the true picture of what is going on in our lives!

I know that Rose is a good value. And it is where he wants to go. But that is a lot of debt for someone so young to take on. It does scare me. I am still thinking about this. In fact I was up all night thinking about it.

We are considering between RH and our in-state college. If I figure in the auto-insurance saving, it would not be so prohibitive. btw my son got 20K merit, grand and work study.

Just some info on salary numbers for graduating seniors…the average starting salary has increased by about $1500 a year every year I have worked at Rose-Hulman. If that trend continues, the Class of 2014 is looking at a STARTING salary average of $66,000 a year. There is a reason that even though our students graduate with 4-5 times as much debt as the national average, the national default rate on student loans is 7 times higher than it is for Rose-Hulman graduates. Rose-Hulman graduates have a much higher ability to pay.

I still haven’t gotten my financial aid package…I submitted my FAFSA mid to late February. Rose is my first choice, but I’d like to know how much of a hole I’ll be burning in my parents’ pockets. :)

Just wanted to correct myself from post #8 - Rose-Hulman is in the middle of the pack for total cost to us of all my son’s favorite schools. I don’t want to unfairly malign Rose-Hulman, a truly lovely school.
