Hello! I am kind of freaking out right now about getting my financial aid package from the University of Virginia. I really want to go there but I am a low income student and can only go if I get a good amount of aid. However, it is April 18th and I still haven’t received my package yet and I was wondering if I’ll be getting less money than others since my application is so late. I did not have the chance to upload my documents in March because my parents hadn’t filed for taxes at that point. Any input is helpful. Thank you!
Call UVA and ask. How long after their deadline did you submit your FAFSA and Profile forms?
You could have done ALL of these financial aid application forms in January using Estimates.
Just ask them how where your FA package is at in the process right now. But you will still be getting both loans, work study, and a pell grant for sure as long as you are low income like you say. It will be the other aid that might be already given out and the deadline for school based aid probably already passed.
It is very possible that all of the grant aid has not been given out yet. My daughter is at an OOS public similar to UVA that meets need. Last March (2015) I asked them if it was “bad” for me to keep redoing my fafsa- I told them I was afraid they would “run out of money” by the time I finished my final fafsa. They told me not to worry. They said that they have “never” run out of money ( ! ) and that the only way that this might possible is if I did not fill out the FA papers until the fall (meaning 6 months after the due date). Then she stated that even then, they would very likely still have money left. She said that in all of the years that she has been working there, they have never run out of grant money!
That being said, you need to call the school today. Every school is different.
UVA does promise to meet need, but last year the proprietary formula changed and they introduced a new Affordable Excellence Model for keeping loan amounts down, particularly for the middle class. There is an Affordable Excellence webpage, and you can click the Family Scenario button to get an idea of what you might expect in terms of aid.
This poster needs to find out what the implication of his/her late financial aid application means. It might be just fine. But only UVA can answer that question. Call the school.
Thank you everyone! I did call UVA and they told me that they will assess all of the financial aid documents fairly and being late will not mean less money.
