Financial aid award

My son was awarded the Presidential Scholarship ($17,000) and a UVM grant of $11,386. My husband and I think we cn pay for the remainder of COA, but we are concerned about whether the grant would be awarded the for the following three years. Can someone who has been at UVM tell us whether the grants are normally renewed each year?

I believe they are renewed each year as long as your financial standing remains the same…but call the Financial Aid Office to check: 802-656-5700 or sfs@uvm.edu

Usually merit based scholarships renew provided the student remains in good academic standing, independent of need. And financial renews assuming your financial situation remains the same.

I believe UVM requires more than ‘good academic standing’ for renewal. A 3.0 gpa? I do know someone who lost hers because her gpa fell below 3.0.

Merit and grants are different. I believe the gpa is now 3.0 for merit. I am not sure if the grant has a gpa requirement or not, it may well depend on the specific grant as grant funds come from a variety of sources. Merit will be for all 4 years but the grant may or may not be. I’d absolutely talk to financial aid about it. For returning students awards do not come out until July. We did not recieve a grant the first year but did the second based on “scholarship” however there is no guarantee we will get it again next year.

In theory if your financial situation doesn’t change the grant should still be offered but there were several families in a panic this summer when grants were reduced or not offered so I’d try to get what reassurance you can.
