Financial Aid Deadlines

I got a private message this morning that asked:

I'm sorry to bother you, but do you know if the decisions on Sunday will include information about financial aid, and if not, how long before the accepted candidates receive that information?

This seemed a common enough question that I thought that I should answer it on an open thread. The answer is no, and the information is on MIT Admissions: Deadlines, but here it is again.

The financial aid office operates independently of the admissions office and their dates are different. For all prospective applicants who applied by the financial aid deadline which was February 15 rather than December 31, then they will be notified of their financial aid package on April 1, April Fool's day. If you think that the financial aid package is wrong, or inadequate, then you can appeal the award, even then, you should know where you stand before you have to accept an offer of admission on May 1. Keep in mind that financial aid awards are based on the ability to pay, rather than the desire to pay.

Hope this helps
