Hi, I'm Italian and I was accepted at stony brook university.
I was told that I could count on some sort of financial aid, but when I started filling the fafsa form, it turned out that funds are for us citizens or permanent resident only, and i am neither!
The school also told me that even if I could get aid from some other source, money would arrive late, like next year.
IS there any international student at stony brook who is currently benefiting of financial aid? CAn you tell me your experience?
If I can't find aid I won't be able to go :(

Who told you that Stony would give an int’l aid?

??? What money would arrive late? Who are you talking to?

First I was told (from an american friend of mine, who attended stony brook together with his italian wife) that i would get aid.
then i applied for aid and found that aid was for us citizens.
than I contacted the school to explain my problem, and they admitted that stony brook does not provide aid for international students. they suggested i could get aid from another source, but they DIDN’T KNOW where this money could come from. maybe some italian organizations who fund italian students abroad.

I just wanted to hear some experience from international students in stony brook, and know how they got the funds.

You have a bigger problem than the school funds. You have to get a student visa to study in the US and in order to do that you have to prove you have the money in hand for all costs including travel in addition to room and board.

The school is just offering a “pie in the sky” possibility. If there were such an opportunity, the deadline to apply would likely be long gone. And, I doubt such an organization is going to give you $100k+ to study in the US.

I’m sorry that you got bad info from an American student. Many don’t understand that most aid for state schools comes from the gov’t and that taxpayers aren’t going to let such funds go to non-tax-payers.

How much will your parents pay?

What are your stats?

If your stats are high enough, you might want to take a gap year and apply to schools that will give merit scholarships (non tax payer dollars) to int’l students.

You will likely have to go to school in your own country.
