Financial Aid for Studying Abroad

How generous is the financial aid for going abroad on a UC-sponsored program? The EAP website claims that studying abroad can be about the same price or cheaper than staying on campus, though I'm not sure how that'd work out for me.

Basically, I currently get a Cal Grant that covers my school fees and I just pay for living expenses and whatnot. It's not that much, plus I have a job. Living in another country, especially one in Western Europe, could easily cost more, not to mention travel expenses. Does Fin aid cover the difference?

Also, anyone have experience working with the study abroad people?

Go on the study abroad website and look how much it costs for each nation or program (eap.ucop.edu). How financial aid seems to work is that they use some type of schedule for how much they say it costs for a semester or year and then subtract your FAFSA EFC to determine how much aid you get, at least that’s how it seems to work for me.

Unfortunately, I’m just starting on working with the study abroad people and with my application so I can’t tell you anything more than that.

Hmmm, EFC counts, really? But I expect they’ll try to make up any gaps using loans (also classified as “aid”), which isn’t helpful to me. I’m wondering if the fin aid office or EAP offers extra grant money specifically for studying abroad.

I’ve noticed that there’s significant price differences between countries, maybe I’ll just go somewhere cheaper…still a little pricier than staying at Berkeley.
